Fordham University will host a conference on the prevention of high-risk drinking among college students with the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) in the 12th-floor lounge of Lowenstein Center, Lincoln Center campus, on Wednesday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The conference will bring together student affairs administrators, prevention professionals, health educators, and health and counseling services staffs from colleges and universities in and around New York City.
The conference will focus on how to develop, fund and evaluate evidence-based programs to reduce high-risk drinking, and how schools in the New York City area can work together to realize the recommendations put forth by the New York City Council’s “Night Life Safety Report.” The report describes strategies to curb underage and excessive drinking, as well as how to improve the safety in and around night clubs and drinking establishments.
Speakers include New York City Council Member Peter Vallone Jr., of Queens; Council Member Helen Foster of the Bronx; Ralph Hingson, Sc.D., the NIAAA director of epidemiology and prevention research; Vivian Faden, Ph.D., co-chair of the NIAAA Initiative on Underage Drinking; Mark Goldman, Ph.D., Distinguished Research Professor at the University of South Florida; Robert Saltz, Ph.D., Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation; and Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham University.
