Sculptor Meryl Taradash’s most recent outdoor sculptures in stainless steel and aluminum are on display through Sept. 8, 2001, on Robert Moses Plaza, Lincoln Center campus, Fordham University. Taradash’s sculptures are large, visually striking and structurally unique. Her work assumes a life of its own, totally dependent on the will of the wind and the light of the sun. For example, in “The Caged Bird Dances II,” which has a rotating spiral, the wind accelerates the aluminum form’s rotation. While reflecting the light, the form appears to dissolve. “As I approached Meryl’s studio, I knew I would see wind-driven sculptures,” says Vivienne Thaul Wechter, Ph.D., Fordham’s artist-in-residence and curator of exhibitions and acquisitions. “However, the lyricism, poetics and the mythological references were startling. … The viewer is riveted to these almost ‘melodious’ works, so that one can almost hear sound.”
