Two members of Fordham University’s faculty and three alumnae have been honored as Mujeres Destacadas, or Women of Distinction, by the Spanish-language newspaper, El Diario La Prensa.
Nitza Milagros Escalera, J.D., assistant dean for student affairs at Fordham Law School, and Clara E. Rodríguez, Ph.D., professor of sociology and associate chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, were among more than 50 women from New York and New Jersey to be honored for their professional achievements.
The alumnae honored by the newspaper were: Gladys Carrión, J.D. (CBA ’73), commissioner of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services; Evelyn Izquierdo-Gellar (FCRH ’84), managing director of MetLife Financial Services; and Wanda M. Piñeiro (GSAS ’84), chair of the Department of Modern Languages at Fordham Preparatory School.
In addition to the honorees, the newspaper awarded Fordham College at Rose Hill freshman Adriana Quitian a $1,000 scholarship. El Diario, which was established in 1913, is the oldest Spanish-language newspaper in the country with a daily circulation of 53,000 and more than 260,000 readers.
