Two Professors Awarded Fulbright Grants

NEW YORK: Two Fordham professors have been awarded 2002-2003 Fulbright Scholar grants to study the impact of AIDS on the Tanzanian economy and 16th century Spanish politics. Economics Professor Robert John Brent, Ph.D., will conduct a cost-benefit analysis of AIDS interventions in Tanzania. He will be based at the University of Dar es Salaam in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, from January through August of 2003. Assistant History Professor Sarah Elizabeth Penry, Ph.D., will research “The Common Man as Comunero: Political Ideology as Understood by Participants in the Revolution of the Communities, 1520-21.” She will be based at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research in Madrid from October 2002 through September 2003. Brent and Penry are among approximately 800 Fulbright recipients who will travel to some 140 countries in the next year to lecture and conduct research. Established in 1946, the program was designed to build mutual understanding between people of the United States and other countries. Award recipients are selected based on their academic and professional achievement and because they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership potential in their fields.
