Fordham University mourns the passing of Joseph F. X. McCarthy, Ph.D., GSE ’50, GSAS ’59, former vice president of academic affairs, who died on Sunday, July 15.

McCarthy, who served as vice president of academic affairs from 1976 to 1984, was also a professor emeritus at the Graduate School of Education. During his tenure, he was involved in several new programs that expanded the University’s reach, including Fordham’s branch campus for graduate-level studies at Marymount College in Tarrytown.

A native of Brooklyn, he served with the weather service in U.S. Air Corps during World War II, and later retired from the Air Force Reserve as Lieutenant Colonel.

He is survived by Margaret Murphy, Mary Mahony McCarthy, Frank McCarthy, Katherine Cahill, Joan Gentile and Helen McCarthy.

A wake was held Tuesday, July 17 and a funeral mass  on Wednesday, July 18, at St. George Church 33 Whitfield Street, Guilford, Conn.

Burial with military honors followed in St. Agnes Cemetery, Route 1, Branford Guilford, Conn.
