SUMMARY:In Concert: The Cassatt Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The world-renowned Cassatt String Quartet\, now in its 40th year\, returns to Fordham after a splendid 2024 visit in the Voices Up! concert series at the Lincoln Center campus. The program includes music by Caroline Shaw\, Mari Kimura\, Jessie Montgomery\, and Fordham professor Lawrence Kramer. Kimura’s work introduces something new to the series: an audiovisual interface created during the performance. The event is free to Fordham students\, faculty\, staff\, and their guests. \nThe Quartet is named for Mary Cassatt\, the great 19th- and 20th-century painter who—in addition to being the only American to exhibit in Paris alongside the Impressionists—did devoted\, lifelong work in support of women’s equality.

SUMMARY:On Disagreement Lecture Series: “Mordecai Kaplan and the Limits of Dissent\,” a conversation between Jenna Weissman Joselit and David Gibson
DESCRIPTION:As part of the On Disagreement lecture series hosted by the Center for Jewish Studies\, this event features a conversation between Jenna Weissman Joselit and David Gibson about Mordecai Kaplan\, a towering figure of 20th-century Judaism in America. \nA self-styled theological maverick in 20th-century America\, Mordecai Kaplan created a brand-new\, homegrown form of Judaism called “Reconstructionism\,” altering its rhythms\, rituals and sensibility to fit the perquisites of a free\, democratic\, and pluralistic society. For his sins\, so to speak\, he was formally excommunicated from the Jewish community in 1945\, its members enjoined to stay clear of him and his many religious publications lest they suffer the “bite of the snake\,” an ancient rabbinic curse. This was just one of the many dramatic moments that comprised the long arc of Kaplan’s life\, whose biography offers an opportunity to explore the impact of freedom\, democracy\, and pluralism on religious authority\, tradition\, identity\, and community. \nJenna Weissman Joselit\, the Charles E. Smith Professor of Judaic Studies and professor of history at George Washington University\, is an historian of American daily life and its relationship to religion. Her latest book\, Mordecai M. Kaplan: Restless Soul\, will be published in March by Yale University Press as part of its Jewish Lives series. Drawing on Kaplan’s more than 70 years of diary-keeping\, it brings to life and humanizes one of American Jewry’s most complicated and controversial personalities. \nDavid Gibson is the director of the Center for Religion and Culture at Fordham. He came to Fordham in 2017 after a long career as an award-winning religion journalist\, author\, and filmmaker\, including at Vatican Radio in Rome and Religion News Service\, where he covered the Vatican and the Catholic Church. Gibson is the author of two books on Catholicism: The Coming Catholic Church: How the Faithful Are Shaping a New American Catholicism and The Rule of Benedict: Pope Benedict XVI and His Battle with the Modern World. He co-wrote and co-produced several documentaries on Christianity for CNN and the History Channel and co-authored a book on biblical archeology\, Finding Jesus: Faith. Fact. Forgery.\, the basis of a popular CNN series of the same name. He is a frequent media commentator and op-ed writer on topics related to the Catholic Church and religion in America.

SUMMARY:Marion Chair Installation
DESCRIPTION:Fordham University is pleased to announce the appointment of Nina Rowe as the John L. Marion Chair in Art History\, Painting\, and Sculpture and requests the pleasure of your company at the installation ceremony and lecture. \nLecture:\nDancing and Dalliance: Picturing Revelry in the Late Middle Ages \nIn 15th-century Germany\, dancing was cause for celebration and concern. Poets crafted accounts of boisterous roundelays\, while Christian moralists and city administrators sought to rein in the hip-shaking and vigorous twirls of new dance moves. Images of dancing abound in illuminations\, wall paintings\, sculptures\, and prints made for urban audiences\, but until now such works have been little explored by scholars. This lecture considers images of dance parties and performers\, exploring the ways in which art in the late Middle Ages could be deployed to rein in\, but also inspire\, footloose fun.

SUMMARY:The 16th Annual Julio Burunat\, Ph.D.\, Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Spiritual Friendship and a Buried Catholic History: Insights for Today\nBrenna Moore\, Th.D.\, Fordham University \nBrenna Moore will be sharing research from her book Kindred Spirits: Friendship and Resistance at the Edges of Modern Catholicism (winner of John Gilmary Shea Prize from the American Catholic Historical Association). She will describe her discovery of an archive of a remarkable\, global network of Catholic intellectuals\, activists and artists from the mid-20th century\, for whom “spiritual friendship” was a key to both the divine and human realms\, a means of accessing the transcendent while also engaging with our social and political existence. This buried history speaks to our own time\, about the need for human connection as an antidote to isolation\, and what it might look like to place deep friendship at the center of our social\, political\, and even spiritual lives.

SUMMARY:Democratization of AI: Impact on Business\, Economy\, and Society
DESCRIPTION:The Gabelli School of Business School invites you to attend the Flaum Leadership Lecture Series featuring Pulak Ghosh\, Ph.D.\, on ”Democratization of AI: Impact on Business\, Economy\, and Society.“ \nA reception will immediately follow the lecture. \nAbout the talk: \nDespite the tremendous progress in the past decade\, artificial intelligence (AI) still belongs to a few large internet-based tech firms. However\, Large Language Models\, riding on our huge knowledge of supervised learning\, are changing that\, and for the first time\, we are hopeful of an “AI for ALL” era. In the lecture\, Ghosh will explore this new wave and give examples of how these new AI systems bring opportunities for the current economy and its future. While we are on the brink of a democratized technological revolution that could jumpstart productivity\, boost global growth\, and raise incomes around the world\, it raises important questions about its potential impact on the global economy and society at large. It could also replace jobs and deepen inequality. The talk will also touch upon the role of regulators in responsible AI practices.

SUMMARY:The 15th Annual Julio Burunat Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Massaro\, S.J.\, Ph.D.\, professor of moral theology with a specialization in Catholic social ethics and public theology\, will deliver the 15th annual Julio Burunat Memorial Lecture\, titled “Pope Francis As Moral Leader: Ethicist\, Discerner\, Communicator\, and Advocate for Social Justice.” \nRecent decades have witnessed a particular type of moral leadership exercised by such global religious figures as the Dalai Lama and recent popes of the Roman Catholic Church. While each has placed a distinctive “spin” on the enactment of leadership qualities in the pursuit of ethical goals\, Pope Francis has redefined the role of moral leader in remarkable ways. He has articulated and advanced a moral agenda that includes bold reform of church structures\, creative initiatives for greater inclusion of the marginalized\, and engagement with such pressing global challenges as climate change\, escalating economic inequality\, and the refugee crisis. In both the style and substance of his leadership\, he has energized millions of the faithful while also garnering considerable opposition. \nThis presentation will describe and analyze how Pope Francis has functioned as an ethicist (in deeds beyond mere words)\, as the church’s discerner-in-chief (solidly in the Jesuit tradition)\, skilled communicator\, and tireless advocate for social justice and peace. The many ethical achievements of his papacy have reshaped the role played by the Catholic Church across the globe. \nRegistration is required.

SUMMARY:Welcoming the Stranger: Abrahamic Hospitality and Contemporary Implications
DESCRIPTION:One of the signal moments in the narrative of Abraham is his insistent and enthusiastic reception of three strangers. That moment is a beginning point of inspiration for all three Abrahamic traditions as they evolve and develop the details of their respective teachings. Such notions have been seriously challenged on many occasions throughout history. \nThe purpose of this conference is to explore these issues from a theoretical and theological perspective\, and a perspective that examines concrete historical and contemporary instances within the past 120 years in which aspects of these issues have played out\, most recently during the ongoing Ukrainian refugee crisis. \nSpeakers \n\nOri Z. SUMMARY:2022 Anastasi Lecture: TIMSS\, PIRLS\, and Friends: Driving Innovation in International Educational Assessments
DESCRIPTION:International Large Scale Assessments (ILSAs) have been conducted since TIMSS 1995 started reporting trends in mathematics and science achievement of students around the world. In this presentation\, Matthias von Davier\, Ph.D.\, Monan Professor in Education at Boston College\, will describe current activities around TIMSS 2023\, setting the standard for fully digital assessments of student achievement with a focus on education\, not economics. The talk will introduce the assessments and discuss how they benefitted from a careful transition to computer-based assessment\, by implementing innovations that serve the needs of countries while reducing the burden of participation. \nvon Davier is the executive director at TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center. His research focuses on developing psychometric models for analyzing data from complex item and respondent samples and on integrating diagnostic procedures into these methods. \nA reception will follow the lecture. \nCan’t make it to the in-person lecture?
