SUMMARY:2019 Anastasi Lecture: 'The Bayesian Revolution\, And Why You Should Care"'
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: David Kaplan\, Ph.D. \nBayesian statistics has long been overlooked in the training of social and behavioral scientists. Bayesian statistics were considered controversial and\, until recently\, it was not feasible to conduct Bayesian statistical modeling because of its complexity and lack of software. \nRecently\, there has been great interest in the application of Bayesian methods\, due to the availability of powerful (and free) statistical software tools that now make it possible to estimate simple or complex models. This talk provides a conceptual introduction to Bayesian statistics with a focus on its advantages over conventional statistics\, particularly with respect to characterizing uncertainty and addressing the so-called “p-value problem.” \nDavid Kaplan\, Ph.D.\, is the Patricia Busk Professor of Quantitative Methods in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on the development of Bayesian statistical methods for education research\, and is directed toward applications to large-scale cross-sectional and longitudinal survey designs. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Education\, a recipient of the Samuel J. Messick Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award from the APA Division 5\, a recipient of the Alexander Von Humboldt Research Prize\, and an honorary research fellow in the Department of Education at the University of Oxford.

SUMMARY:Screening of Little White Lie and a Q&A with Lacey Schwartz
DESCRIPTION:Little White Lie tells Lacey Schwartz’s story of growing up in a typical upper-middle-class Jewish household in Woodstock\, New York\, with loving parents and a strong sense of her Jewish identity — despite the open questions from those around her about how a white girl could have such dark skin. She believes her family’s explanation that her looks were inherited from her dark-skinned Sicilian grandfather. But when her parents abruptly split\, her gut starts to tell her something different. \nAt the age of 18\, she finally confronts her mother and learns the truth: her biological father was not the man who raised her\, but a black man named Rodney with whom her mother had had an affair. Afraid of losing her relationship with her parents\, Lacey doesn’t openly acknowledge her newly discovered black identity with her white family. When her biological father dies shortly before Lacey’s 30th birthday\, the family secret can stay hidden no longer. Following the funeral\, Lacey begins a quest to reconcile the hidden pieces of her life and heal her relationship with the only father she ever knew. \nAll Fordham events in Jewish Studies are free.

SUMMARY:Cracks in the Secular: James K. A. Smith and the Augustinian Call
DESCRIPTION:Our modern world has a particular vision of what the “pursuit of happiness” means. Independence. Self-sufficiency. Conforming the world to our desires. \nJames K. A. Smith—philosopher\, popular lecturer\, and prolific author—understands the attraction of such secular happiness\, especially for young people. But he also detects what he calls “cracks in the secular\,” signs that can illuminate a different path to happiness. \nSmith will share insights from his new book on spiritual seeking\, On the Road with Saint Augustine: A Real-World Spirituality for Restless Hearts.

SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ Catholic Activism: A Global Conversation
DESCRIPTION:The Fordham University Department of Theology and the Church of St. Francis Xavier present “LGBTQ+ Catholic Activism: A Global Conversation” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and World Pride 2019. SUMMARY:Jewish Studies Book Club featuring Jessica Marglin\, “Across Legal Lines: Jews and Muslims in Modern Morocco”
DESCRIPTION:Across Legal Lines: Jews and Muslims in Modern Morocco\, which won the 2017–2018 National Jewish Book Award in Sephardic Culture and the 2016 Baron Book Prize from the American Academy for Jewish Research\, examines Jewish–Muslim relations in Morocco by following the Assarrafs\, a Judeo-Morrocan merchant family from Fez\, in the late 19th and early 20th century\, a time of upheaval in Morocco. Jessica Marglin demonstrates that Jews used the courts and law to integrate into Muslim society until European colonial powers intervened. Through a legal lens\, Marglin challenges common perceptions of Jewish history\, Jewish–Muslim relations\, the Middle East\, and the nature of legal pluralism. Join us for an evening conversation with Jessica Marglin about her award-winning book. \nCopies of the book can be purchased at the Fordham Bookstore at Lincoln Center (113 West 60th Street) or online at yalebooks.com with a 25% discount (code for online purchases YZ979). CUNY graduate students and Fordham students and faculty can request copies of their books free of charge by contacting jewishstudies@fordham.edu. \nThe Jewish Studies Book Club is a joint initiative of The Graduate Center\, CUNY\, and Fordham University\, in collaboration with the New York Public Library.
