SUMMARY:2018 Graduate School of Education Curriculum and Teaching Spring Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Families\, educators\, and community members must carefully consider the impact of dramatic shifts in our social\, political\, and environmental conversations and actions on the development and experiences of children\, youth\, and young adults. Rather than assuming a wait-and-see approach\, educators and behavioral mental health providers are now being urged to explicitly adopt a preventive approach and double-down on behavioral practices that address the direct and indirect effects of trauma\, discrimination\, harassment\, and violence. In addition\, since students spend six hours a day\, 180 days per year\, and at least 12 years of their lives in schools\, educators have unique opportunities to teach\, model\, and reinforce caring\, safe\, and responsible learning environments. \nThis presentation by George Sugai\, Ph.D.\, will describe the logic and core features of this behavioral and prevention sciences approach\, It will also emphasize what educators can do daily and hourly with all their students to reduce risk and strengthen their social\, emotional\, and behavioral skills. \nGeorge Sugai\, Ph.D.\, is the Carole J. Neag Endowed Professor in Special Education at the Neag School of Education of the University of Connecticut. His expertise is in behavior analysis\, classroom and behavior management\, school-wide discipline\, function-based behavior support\, school-wide positive behavior supports\, and educating students with behavioral disorders. He has been a teacher in public schools\, a treatment director in a residential program\, and a program administrator. Sugai conducts applied school and classroom research and works with schools to translate research into practice\, especially at the school-wide\, district\, and state levels. He is currently co-director (with Rob Horner and Tim Lewis) of the Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and supports the University of Connecticut and University of Oregon. He is also the co-director (with Mary Beth Bruder) of the Early Childhood Personnel Center and is a research scientist for the Center on Behavioral Education and Research in the Neag School of Education.

SUMMARY:From Galileo to Laudato Si’: Why Science Needs Faith
DESCRIPTION:Guy Consolmagno\, S.J.\, Director of the Vatican Observatory delivering The John C. and Jeanette D. Walton Lecture in Science\, Philosophy\, and Religion at Fordham University. \nGuy Consolmagno is a planetary scientist\, the director of the Vatican Observatory\, and president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation. He is the author of over 200 scientific publications\, and several popular books including Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial? (with Paul Mueller\, SJ) and Turn Left at Orion (with Dan Davis). He has hosted science programs for BBC Radio\, has been interviewed in numerous documentary films\, has appeared on The Colbert Report\, and writes a monthly science column for The Tablet. He is the 2014 recipient of the Carl Sagan Medal from the American Astronomical Society. \nLogic and reason must always start with assumptions\, and the assumptions behind science are\, at their root\, religious assumptions. Our core beliefs not only determine how we expect the universe to work; they also and just as importantly supply the motivation for the science we do\, and indeed they determine why we as individuals choose to be scientists. The nature of how we understand this relationship\, however\, has changed radically from the time of Galileo\, when science was still being invented; and that change continues to this day\, as can be seen in the way Pope Francis has blended science and faith in his recent encyclical Laudato Si’. \nA reception immediately follows the lecture. \nRSVP online by Monday\, February 19\, 2018.

SUMMARY:Civil Religion: Road to Redemption or American Heresy?
DESCRIPTION:Civil religion has been described as a powerful\, shared\, but nondenominational belief in the United States as an exceptional nation\, a city upon a hill that was great because it was good. But today civil religion is coming under scrutiny as some see the angry populism of the Trump era turning the cohesive force of patriotism into blood-and-soil nationalism. \nCan a country in which the national anthem has become a dividing line still rally around civic sacraments and symbols? \nSpeakers\n\nKathleen Flake\, Richard Lyman Bushman Professor of Mormon Studies at University of Virginia\nJohn Carlson\, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Arizona State University and Interim Director of the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict\nSusan Wise Bauer\, Essayist and Author of the History of the World Series for W. SUMMARY:The Human Being as the Image of God in Fourth-to-Sixth-Century Coptic Texts.
DESCRIPTION:This lecture by Dr. Alberto Camplani\, Professor of History of Christianity at the Sapienza University of Rome\, will propose a new contextualization of fourth- and fifth-century Egyptian Christian debates about the human being “in the image of God” by locating them within broader intellectual and institutional tensions in the Egyptian church and highlighting the originality of the Coptic contribution. These debates surrounded such issues as the place of God’s image in the human compound\, the image’s permanence after the fall of Adam and Eve\, the role of the body in higher forms of prayer and mysticism\, and the significance of anthropomorphic expressions found in the Bible. \nSponsored by the Orthodox Christian Studies Center. \nLight refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Arresting Tales: Law and Morality in Modern Jewish Literature
DESCRIPTION:Arresting Tales: Law and Morality in Modern Jewish Literature will straddle two seemingly unrelated phenomena in Jewish history: the encounter of Polish Jews with the concept of state law and the birth of modern Jewish literature in Eastern Europe. Drawing on newly discovered documents\, legal texts\, poems\, and plays\, Dynes will reflect on the experience of a generation of Jews who\, in the wake of Poland’s partitions (1773–1795)\, experienced the shift from living under Polish feudal-like rule to being subject to an imperial state and its laws. Dynes will explain how literature then emerged as a means to popularize strategic knowledge about the law\, extract new forms of political experience\, and reflect on the relationship between the legal and the moral. The Emerging Voices in Jewish Studies Award is presented jointly by Fordham University’s Jewish Studies program and Columbia University’s Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies to promising young scholars who are treading new paths in Jewish studies.
