SUMMARY:Arresting Tales: Law and Morality in Modern Jewish Literature
DESCRIPTION:Arresting Tales: Law and Morality in Modern Jewish Literature will straddle two seemingly unrelated phenomena in Jewish history: the encounter of Polish Jews with the concept of state law and the birth of modern Jewish literature in Eastern Europe. Drawing on newly discovered documents\, legal texts\, poems\, and plays\, Dynes will reflect on the experience of a generation of Jews who\, in the wake of Poland’s partitions (1773–1795)\, experienced the shift from living under Polish feudal-like rule to being subject to an imperial state and its laws. Dynes will explain how literature then emerged as a means to popularize strategic knowledge about the law\, extract new forms of political experience\, and reflect on the relationship between the legal and the moral. The Emerging Voices in Jewish Studies Award is presented jointly by Fordham University’s Jewish Studies program and Columbia University’s Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies to promising young scholars who are treading new paths in Jewish studies.

SUMMARY:A Celebration of Marie Ponsot
DESCRIPTION:Marie Ponsot’s life has been a long and generous one. Born in 1921\, Ponsot is in the midst of her tenth decade\, and\, as her accomplishments will attest\, she hasn’t wasted any of her time. She has translated some thirty-seven books from French into English\, written numerous radio and television scripts\, co-authored two books on the pedagogy of writing\, and published 6 volumes of poems. The recent release of her “Collected Poems” represent a lifetime of achievement for this New York City poet\, who was also a longtime teacher of young poets\, is the mother of seven children\, and is a lifetime Roman Catholic. For seven decades Ponsot has written poems characterized by linguistic richness and formal elegance\, poems that have engaged literary tradition and offered readers the music of the English language\, and poems that\, taken together\, constitute a voice that is unmistakable and original. \nThe recipient of the Shaughnessy Medal of the Modern Language Association\, the Delmore Schwartz Memorial Prize\, and the Lilly Prize\, and a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets\, The Curran Center for American Catholic Studies and Fordham University are proud to present Marie Ponsot with a Lifetime Achievement Award. \nPlease join us for a celebration of Ponsot’s work\, one of the premiere American Catholic poets of the past century.

SUMMARY:Ambitious Literacy Education
DESCRIPTION:GSE Centennial Lecture Series: Celebrating the Graduate School of Education Centennial \nToo many students of low socioeconomic status (SES) experience low expectations and low-level literacy education. In this presentation\, Duke will describe ambitious literacy education\, with a particular focus on examples from classrooms serving large numbers of students from low-SES backgrounds. Project-based learning will be offered as one example of an (at least potentially) ambitious approach to developing literacy. \nAbout Nell Duke\nNell K. Duke is a professor in literacy\, language\, and culture and in the combined program in education and psychology at the University of Michigan. Duke’s work focuses on early literacy development\, particularly among children living in poverty. She has served as co-principal investigator of projects funded by the Institute of Education Sciences\, the National Science Foundation\, the Spencer Foundation\, and the George Lucas Educational Foundation\, among other organizations. In 2014\, Duke was awarded the P. David Pearson Scholarly Influence Award from the Literacy Research Association. She has also received awards from the American Educational Research Association\, the International Reading Association\, and the National Council of Teachers of English. Duke’s most recent book is Inside Information: Developing Powerful Readers and Writers of Informational Text through Project-based Instruction. She currently serves as editor of The Research-Informed Classroom book series and co-editor of the Not This\, But That book series. Duke has a strong interest in improving the quality of educational research training in the U.S. Her Twitter handle is @nellkduke. \nMore information. \nFor more information\, contact Kelly Milnes at 212-636-6409 or kmilnes@fordham.edu.

SUMMARY:GSAS Centennial Lecture: Democracy and Its Discontents
DESCRIPTION:America is a young nation but a very old republic. It is\, in fact\, the world’s oldest constitutional democracy. How did that happen? \nAmerican democracy is not simply the product of the genius of the founding fathers (and mothers) but rather the work of generations. It has had inherent problems and faced daunting challenges but over the centuries it has endured and expanded its scope and scale. \nToday it confronts new dangers — economic\, technological and above all political — and must find a way to combat and overcome them. The stakes are high. \nKeynote Speaker: Fareed Zakaria\, Ph.D.\nFareed Zakaria is host of CNN’s flagship international affairs program — Fareed Zakaria GPS — a Washington Post columnist\, a contributing editor at The Atlantic and a New York Times bestselling author. He was described in 1999 by Esquire Magazine as “the most influential foreign policy adviser of his generation.” In 2010\, foreign policy named him one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers. \nThis lecture celebrates Fordham’s Dodransbicentennial and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Centennial. \nRSVP here: https://form.jotform.com/60214573573959

SUMMARY:Lecture: The Internet at the Speed of Light
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 Clavius Distinguished Lecture \nBruce Maggs\, Ph.D.\, Pelham Wilder Professor of Computer Science\, Duke University and Vice President of Research\, Akamai Technologies\, will deliver the 2017 Clavius Distinguished Lecture. \nThe Internet at the Speed of Light \nFor the past two decades Internet service providers have focused on increasing the amount of bandwidth available to home users. But for many Internet services\, such as electronic commerce and search\, reducing latency is the key to improving the user experience and increasing service provider revenues. While in principle the speed of the Internet could nearly match the speed of light\, in practice inefficiencies in the physical infrastructure and in network protocols result in latencies that are often one to two orders of magnitude larger than lower bound implied by the speed of light. Hence\, we propose a challenge to the\nnetworking research community: build a speed-of-light Internet. This talk explores the various causes of delay on the Internet\, sketches out two approaches for improving the physical infrastructure\, and explores which applications will benefit most from reduced latency.
