SUMMARY:Haciendo Caminos: A Retreat for All Saints and All Souls
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in Latino Catholic traditions\, the Haciendo Caminos retreat provides space to pray\, reflect\, and sit with memory. Through story\, music\, and silence\, participants will reflect on the feasts of All Saints and All Souls\, and on the people whose lives continue to shape their own. \nThe retreat will be led by Natalia Imperatori-Lee\, Ph.D.\, a Fordham graduate and associate professor of theology. Her work focuses on feminist and Latinx theologies and the ways women claim credibility\, both inside and outside the Church. She’s written for Commonweal\, America\, and The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion\, and is the author of Cuéntame and Women and the Church. \nThe event also introduces Fordham’s partnership with Haciendo Caminos\, a national effort to support Latino Catholics who are discerning lives of service\, ministry\, and education. Fordham is one of 18 institutions across the country helping to form that next generation of leadership. \nThe program starts with a presentation in McShane 260\, followed by a 3:30 p.m. Mass celebrated by Francis X. McAloon\, S.J. (M.Div.\, STL\, Ph.D.). Pan de Muertos and hot chocolate will be served afterward. \nAll are welcome! To attend\, please RSVP to Luz Marina Díaz\, Ph.D.\, at aludiaz@fordham.edu.

SUMMARY:Fly Me Away: An Original Jazz Musical
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) collaborated with emerging musician and artist Miguel Sutedjo\, FCRH ’23\, for his original jazz musical\, Fly Me Away\, made possible through MOCA’s Creative Space Grant initiative. \nFly Me Away follows teenage jazz pianist Frank and his father as they move from Shanghai to New York City in pursuit of a better life. Despite his father’s dissuasion\, Frank immerses himself in the NYC jazz scene; meanwhile\, his father loses his corporate job and finds work in a Chinatown dumpling shop. As life grows more difficult for Frank and his father\, they realize just what it takes to succeed in America and fly away to their dreams. \nJoin us for an unstaged song cycle performance of the musical. \n\n\nThe performance of Fly Me Away is supported by the Fordham Undergraduate Research Grant and the Fordham Honors Ambassadorial Grant.

SUMMARY:Be an Upstander: The Fred Heyman Story: Screening and Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this documentary screening and talk with Holocaust survivor Fred Heyman and producer Howard Goldberg. Refreshments will be served! \nAbout Fred Heyman\nHeyman was born in Berlin\, Germany. He is the only male survivor of his family\, who resided in the city until the end of 1946 and experienced anti-Semitism and the rise and fall of Nazi Germany while Heyman was a teenager. He managed to survive with the help of a Catholic family. Only about 8\,000 Berlin Jews survived the Nazi era out of the 170\,000 Jews who populated the city in the 1920s\, making up a third of the entire Jewish population of Germany or 4 percent of the city’s population at the time. Only 4\,700 were protected from deportation by “mixed marriages” to an “Aryan” partner\, like the Heymans. Only 1\,900 returned from camps\, and an estimated 1\,500 survived underground. But once the war was over\, only a few wanted to remain in Germany. The Heyman family also decided to emigrate to the United States in 1947. Fred Heyman did not want to talk about his experiences for a long time. But after being approached to share his memories\, his current mission emerged: “The opposite of a bystander is an upstander. I want to be an upstander. I want people to be upstanders. In Nazi Germany\, most people did not help\,” he says. \nFor more information\, contact Maria Ebner at mebner1@fordham.edu. \nThis even is being generously supported by Dean of Fordham College at Rose Hill Maura Mast\, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures\, and the Jewish Studies program.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Moral Stress and Spiritual Struggles
DESCRIPTION:This workshop explores crises that make people feel fearful or shameful about causing harm\, generating moral stress. Such stress often involves conflicting values. For example\, health crises can involve shame about not taking care of one’s health\, and fearful conflicts over the financial vs. health costs of seeking or not seeking health care. Chaplains\, religious leaders\, and clinicians can easily experience moral stress over providing client/spiritual care while complying with health plans/organizations that limit time with those needing care. Many people experience conflicts in balancing family\, professional\, and financial responsibilities. These conflicting values and associated emotions like shame\, fear\, and guilt may be part of automatic\, stress-based moral/spiritual orienting systems shaped by family/cultural systems (like racism\, sexism\, classism\, and heterosexism) that heighten individual responsibility for causing harm. \nParticipants will explore their own experiences of moral stress and identify calming practices that foster self-compassion. Illustrations\, self-reflection\, and roles plays will be used to identify spiritual practices fostering self-compassion. Participants will reflect on how to identify and use spiritual practices to live out values and beliefs about goodness\, compassion\, and love.
