SUMMARY:IPED Lecture: "Venezuela—How Democracy was Used to Destroy Democracy"
DESCRIPTION:David Smolansky\, deputy director of the ConVzla Presidential Campaign\, shares insights on the state of democracy in Venezuela. Smolansky is a Venezuelan politician and democracy activist representing opposition leader María Corina Machado and President-Elect Edmundo González in Washington\, D.C. Formerly mayor of El Hatillo in Caracas\, he earned international recognition for transparency and crime reduction before being persecuted by Nicolás Maduro’s regime\, which issued an arrest warrant\, removed him from office\, and forced him into exile. Appointed by the OAS Secretary General as Special Envoy for the Venezuelan migration crisis\, he led advocacy across the Americas\, authoring 15 reports on migrant protection and integration. Smolansky holds a BA in Journalism from Universidad Católica Andrés Bello and a Master’s in international public policy from Johns Hopkins University\, with additional fellowships at Georgetown and Stanford. His case has been cited by the OAS\, UN\, and ICC in reports on crimes against humanity in Venezuela.

DESCRIPTION:Fordham’s graduate program in International Policy Economy and Development (IPED) Foreign Aid and Development class presents 2026 updates to the “Fordham’s Pope Francis Global Poverty Report.” In response to Pope Francis’ 2015 address to the UN General Assembly\, the faculty and students of IPED devised a unique and innovative measure of integral human development that looks not only at material poverty but also spiritual poverty. In contrast to other measures\, the Fordham Francis Index (FFI) is more pro-poor and pro-freedom\, emphasizing basic human needs and civil liberties.

SUMMARY:IPED Lecture: "Wildlife Conservation and Indigenous Peoples Rights"
DESCRIPTION:Sushil Raj\, executive director of the Rights and Communities global program at the Wildlife Conservation Society\, will discus his work at the intersection of wildlife conservation and indigenous peoples rights. WCS seeks to respect and protect the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities and amplify their voice in conservation policies\, practices\, and governance structures. In doing so WCS Global is traveling a necessary pathway to equitable\, just\, and durable conservation. WCS harnesses the power of New York’s four zoos and its aquarium and a global conservation program to protect wildlife and wild places. \nSushil previously served on a UN Human Rights Council special procedures mandate with the working group of experts on people of African descent\, and also as an official with the United Nations department of political affairs\, office of the UN High Commissioner for human rights\, secretariat of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues\, and in philanthropy with the Ford Foundation\, Asia Foundation\, among other institutions. He serves on the board of the New York Peace Institute\, a mediation organization\, and is also a practicing mediator. \nRaj has a BA in philosophy from St. Stephen’s College\, University of Delhi; a postgraduate diploma in public international law from the Indian Academy of International Law and Diplomacy; an MA in international political economy and development from Fordham University; and an MSc in management of international public service organizations from the New York University Wagner School of Public Service.

With more than 20 years of experience in sustainable development policy and on‑the‑ground implementation\, his work centers on building high‑impact public‑private alliances that maximize resource utilization and scale farmer‑ and community‑level interventions\, delivering verified outcomes across traceability\, deforestation‑free sourcing\, livelihoods\, and environmental performance. Sanchez has led and contributed to customer‑facing sustainability and impact reports\, thought‑leadership pieces\, and executive summaries\, translating complex data into actionable insights. Listen as they share their adventures in other countries while doing Peace Corps service in agriculture\, community economic development\, education\, environment\, health\, and youth development. \nHear from IPED graduate students Claire Bodger\, who served in Mongolia; Sydney Clapham\, who served in Fiji; Trevor Cox\, who served in Kenya; Tymber Felts\, who served in Ecuador; Andrew Galbraith\, who served in Guinea; Christopher Lempa\, who served in Costa Rica; and Richard Whiting\, who served in Mongolia. We are also featuring Christopher Dietrich\, PhD\, chair of the history department\, who served in the Dominican Republic. \nIPED joins the celebration of Peace Corps week this March 1 to 5\, 2026\, to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the Peace Corps. IPED is a partner institution for the Peace Corps Coverdell Fellows program\, which offers financial assistance to RPCVs for pursuing a master’s degree in IPED. In addition to their graduate degree\, Peace Corps fellows gain valuable on-the-job training in project management while interning with a community development organization in an underserved U.S. community.

SUMMARY:IPED Lecture: “Bid for Internationalism—The Dialogue Between Pope Pius XII and President Franklin Roosevelt on Peace and International Order”
DESCRIPTION:Join Fordham IPED\, the Curran Center for American Catholic Studies\, and the Fordham Political Science Department for a talk by Madalena Meyer Resende\, PhD\, examining the dialogue between Pope Pius XII and President Franklin D. Roosevelt on the future postwar international order during the first year of World War II (1939–1940). As leaders of officially neutral states\, both sought pathways to negotiated peace. The presentation explores Catholic thought on international relations\, focusing on national self-determination\, the role of states\, disarmament\, and international organizations\, and situating these within Wilsonian ideas and the Thomist natural law tradition. The talk also examines Roosevelt’s emerging universalist vision and growing use of Christian language\, set against deepening Vatican–White House engagement. It concludes with the influence of the American episcopate\, whose approach to international relations blended neo-Thomist natural law internationalism with a commitment to liberal democratic statehood. \nResende is an associate professor at NOVA University of Lisbon – School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH) and a senior researcher at Portuguese Institute of Internacional Relations (IPRI-NOVA). She held visiting fellowships at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) and at the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels. She holds a PhD in government from the London School of Economics (2005). Her research focuses on nationalism\, Catholicism and constitutionalism. She is a member of the academic council of the Wilfried Martens Centre in Brussels and has held leadership positions in national and international associations\, including president of the Portuguese Political Science Association (APCP) and vice president of the International Political Science Association (IPSA). She is currently sub dean for Internationalization at NOVA FCSH. \nJames P. McCartin\, PhD\, Associate Professor at Fordham’s Department of Theology will serve as discussant for this lecture.

DESCRIPTION:Kyle Bawot\, senior director of trading at Olam\, will discuss his role in the trading of coffee as a commodity in the current geopolitical climate. Bawot is an experienced professional in the green coffee trading sector at Olam since September 2014. Kyle’s career at Olam includes roles such as trader\, commercial manager for Green Coffee in Colombia\, and junior trader. His journey into the world of coffee began during his time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Peru\, where he was first exposed to coffee production and export. Upon his return to the US\, Kyle joined OFI (Olam Food Ingredients) and quickly worked his way into a commodities trading role. Kyle holds both Q Grader and ICE Exchange Grader licenses. He continually seeks to deepen his understanding of each facet of the industry\, with a special focus on the industry’s sustainability challenges. Kyle attended Skidmore College and Fordham University\, from which he earned a BA in Economics and an MA in International Political Economy and Development (IPED)\, respectively.

DESCRIPTION:Erick Rengifo\, Ph.D.\, associate professor of economics\, will discuss microfinance and its role in economic development. Professor Rengifo is the founder and director of the Center for International Policy Studies (CIPS) and an active scholar with interests in econometric forecasts\, risk management\, insurance\, microfinance\, and micro-insurance. Professor Rengifo also has extensive private sector experience as an economic consultant\, an independent investment and project counselor\, and as a corporation controller. He has also been a university professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and Universidad Nacional de San Marcos (Perú). Erick Rengifo holds a Ph.D. in economics with a concentration in finance and Econometrics from the Catholic University of Louvain-Belgium. His academic background includes an M.A. in economics from the Catholic University of Louvain-Belgium\, an M.A. in finance from the Universidad del Pacífico\, and an M.A. in economics with a concentration in quantitative methods in economics from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (Perú).

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a timely lecture by Romina Bandura exploring how global challenges are reshaping the landscape of international aid and investment. \nMs. Romina Bandura is a senior fellow with the Project on Prosperity and Development at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Ms. Bandura is an economist with 25 years of experience in international development research\, policy analysis\, and project management. Her current research focuses on foreign aid and development finance\, Ukraine recovery and reconstruction\, digital transformation\, financial inclusion\, and the future of work in developing countries. She has also conducted extensive research on the United States’ economic engagement in the developing world and enhancing the reach and impact of the multilateral development bank system. Her work is often cited in prominent media outlets. Before joining CSIS in September 2017\, she was a senior consultant at the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). She worked closely with clients to design research and manage projects that included index building\, quantifying qualitative variables\, policy analysis\, and strategies for investment and growth. EIU flagship projects include benchmarking indices like the Global Microscope on Financial Inclusion and the Latin America and Caribbean Infrascope project. She also held positions as an economist at the International Labour Organization’s Washington office\, a business manager at DAI’s Economic Growth Sector (managing a $90 million private sector development portfolio of projects in Africa\, Asia\, and Eastern Europe)\, and a policy analyst for the UN Development Programme. Early in her career\, she worked in the banking sector in Argentina. Ms. Bandura holds an MPA in international development from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a BA in economics from the Universidad Católica Argentina\, Buenos Aires.

DESCRIPTION:Katherine Theiss is a Ph.D. candidate in economics at Fordham University. Her research fields are development economics and applied microeconomics\, with a focus on gender\, health\, public economics\, and applied econometrics. In her current work\, she utilizes rigorous econometric techniques to answer important policy questions in the areas of gender and health in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Specifically\, her research agenda aims to achieve two distinct but interconnected objectives: 1. Contribute to our understanding of the causal drivers and mitigators of gender-based deprivations in LMICs\, and 2. Improve the measurement of health and development indicators. \nShe has consulted on several data-driven projects carried out by various international organizations\, including the United Nations\, the World Bank\, IMPAQ International\, and the National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago.

DESCRIPTION:Father Joshua Awienagua Gariba\, Ph.D. is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Ghana’s premier university\, the University of Ghana\, Legon. Gariba earned his PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology from the KU Leuven\, Belgium. He teaches social anthropology\, societies and cultures of Africa and sociology of the family to undergraduate and graduate students. He has published in international journals such as the Nordic Journal of African Studies\, African Anthropologist\, Contemporary Journal of African Studies and Anthropos. He is a visiting scholar at the KU Leuven\, Belgium and presently in the Fordham International Political Economy and Development (IPED) Graduate Program. \nFather Gariba is currently researching on land conflicts\, ethnic and chieftaincy conflicts and mining activities in southern Ghana. He is a member of the Ghana Studies Association (GSA)\, Anthropos Institute International (AI)\, and the Ghana Sociological and Anthropological Association (GSAA).

SUMMARY:Global Affairs Expert Webinar: Migration and Labor Economics
DESCRIPTION:Giovanni Peri\, C. Bryan Cameron distinguished professor in international economics and founder and director of the Global Migration Center at University of California\, Davis\, and Edward Alden\, senior fellow at CFR\, will lead the conversation on migration and labor economics. \nGiovanni Peri is the C. Bryan Cameron Distinguished Professor in International Economics at the University of California\, Davis and a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. He is the Founder and the Director of the UC Davis Global Migration Center focusing on international migrations and migration policies. He was Co-Editor of the “Journal of the European Economic Association” between January 2019 and December 2023\, and in the Editorial Board of several Academic Journals in Economics. \nEdward Alden is senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)\, specializing in U.S. economic competitiveness\, trade\, and immigration policy. His latest book is When the World Closed Its Doors: The Covid-19 Tragedy and the Future of Borders\, co-authored with Laurie Trautman\, where they argue that even as states are increasingly resorting to border restrictions\, they are inadequate for addressing pandemics\, drugs\, migration and other external challenges.

DESCRIPTION:The Trump administration’s efforts to halt funding and dismantle the United States’ capacity to provide food for the hungry\, health care for the sick\, and hope for the poorest people on earth are destroying the lives and dignity of millions of our sisters and brothers around the world. \nThis dialogue focuses on the human consequences and moral implications of this abandonment of our nation’s traditional commitment to the poor around the world. We will look at these actions through the experience and expertise of Catholic sisters serving the poor around the globe and the work of Catholic Relief Services\, which offers life-saving humanitarian assistance in almost 100 nations. \nSr. Eneless Chimbali\, SBVM is a member of the servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Blantyre\, Malawi and a senior program officer for all Africa Conference : Sister to Sister. She serves on the board of Catholic Relief Services. \nSr. Florence Muia\, ASN is a member of the Sisters of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Nairobi and the founder of Upendo village\, a facility in Kenya\, designed to support people living with HIV in low-income communities around Nairobi. \nBill O’Keefe is the executive vice president for mission and mobilization at CRS\, where he overseees CRS effortd to change US foreign policy in ways that promote justice and reduce poverty overseas. \nSr. Dee Smith\, M.M is a maryknoll sister and one of the founders of Proyecto Vida\, an HIV/SIDA education\, prevention and treatment effort in Guatemala.

SUMMARY:Global Affairs Expert Webinar: Women\, Peace\, and Security
DESCRIPTION:Bonnie D. Jenkins\, the Shapiro visiting professor of international affairs at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs and former U.S. undersecretary of state for arms control and international security\, will lead the conversation on women\, peace\, and security.  \nJenkins has served as the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security since July 22\, 2021. In this role\, she oversees three key bureaus: the Arms Control\, Deterrence\, and Stability Bureau; the International Security and Nonproliferation Bureau (ISN); and the PoliticalMilitary Affairs Bureau. Notably\, she was appointed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken in May 2023 to lead the Department’s implementation efforts on AUKUS\, the trilateral security partnership between Australia\, the United Kingdom\, and the United States. \nIrina A. Faskianos is vice president for the National Program and Outreach at the Council on Foreign Relations\, where she directs programming for CFR members residing outside of New York and Washington. Ms. Faskianos also manages the development and implementation of CFR’s Outreach Initiatives that connect CFR’s resources with educators and students\, religion and congregational leaders\, state and local officials\, and local journalists.

SUMMARY:IPED Lecture : The Crisis in Eastern DRC and its Reverberations Across the Great Lakes Region and Africa
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an IPED lecture with Denis Owiny\, a global politics and security professional with a diverse background\, focusing on U.S.-Africa relations\, democracy\, governance\, political violence\, Islamist extremism\, conflict prevention\, and peacebuilding. His professional journey includes roles in teaching\, government\, and think tanks. He served at St Joseph’s College Layibi as an English language teacher\, at the Parliament of Uganda as an assistant editor of Hansard\, and at the Center for Strategic and International Studies Africa Program as a research intern. He currently serves as director of external relations and stakeholder outreach at the Uganda National Academy of Sciences. \nOwiny holds an M.S. in foreign service from Georgetown University\, a postgraduate diploma in public administration and management from Uganda Management Institute\, and a B.A. in education from Gulu University. He is passionate about climate change advocacy\, evidenced by his attendance at COP28 in Dubai\, where he focused on climate finance for adaptation in sub-Saharan Africa. His research spans great power competition\, violent extremism\, democratic governance\, and the U.S. extra-regional hegemony.
