Bryan Cameron distinguished professor in international economics and founder and director of the Global Migration Center at University of California\, Davis\, and Edward Alden\, senior fellow at CFR\, will lead the conversation on migration and labor economics. \nGiovanni Peri is the C. Bryan Cameron Distinguished Professor in International Economics at the University of California\, Davis and a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. He is the Founder and the Director of the UC Davis Global Migration Center focusing on international migrations and migration policies. He was Co-Editor of the “Journal of the European Economic Association” between January 2019 and December 2023\, and in the Editorial Board of several Academic Journals in Economics. \nEdward Alden is senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)\, specializing in U.S. economic competitiveness\, trade\, and immigration policy. His latest book is When the World Closed Its Doors: The Covid-19 Tragedy and the Future of Borders\, co-authored with Laurie Trautman\, where they argue that even as states are increasingly resorting to border restrictions\, they are inadequate for addressing pandemics\, drugs\, migration and other external challenges.

Jenkins\, the Shapiro visiting professor of international affairs at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs and former U.S. undersecretary of state for arms control and international security\, will lead the conversation on women\, peace\, and security.  \nJenkins has served as the Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security since July 22\, 2021. In this role\, she oversees three key bureaus: the Arms Control\, Deterrence\, and Stability Bureau; the International Security and Nonproliferation Bureau (ISN); and the PoliticalMilitary Affairs Bureau. Notably\, she was appointed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken in May 2023 to lead the Department’s implementation efforts on AUKUS\, the trilateral security partnership between Australia\, the United Kingdom\, and the United States. \nIrina A. Faskianos is vice president for the National Program and Outreach at the Council on Foreign Relations\, where she directs programming for CFR members residing outside of New York and Washington. Ms. Faskianos also manages the development and implementation of CFR’s Outreach Initiatives that connect CFR’s resources with educators and students\, religion and congregational leaders\, state and local officials\, and local journalists.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an IPED lecture with Denis Owiny\, a global politics and security professional with a diverse background\, focusing on U.S.-Africa relations\, democracy\, governance\, political violence\, Islamist extremism\, conflict prevention\, and peacebuilding. His professional journey includes roles in teaching\, government\, and think tanks. He served at St Joseph’s College Layibi as an English language teacher\, at the Parliament of Uganda as an assistant editor of Hansard\, and at the Center for Strategic and International Studies Africa Program as a research intern. He currently serves as director of external relations and stakeholder outreach at the Uganda National Academy of Sciences. \nOwiny holds an M.S. in foreign service from Georgetown University\, a postgraduate diploma in public administration and management from Uganda Management Institute\, and a B.A. in education from Gulu University. He is passionate about climate change advocacy\, evidenced by his attendance at COP28 in Dubai\, where he focused on climate finance for adaptation in sub-Saharan Africa. His research spans great power competition\, violent extremism\, democratic governance\, and the U.S. extra-regional hegemony.

DESCRIPTION:Jack Brower is an international economist with the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) and graduated from the IPED program in 2021. Since graduating\, he has also held roles with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service working in commodity analysis on livestock and animal proteins. During his time in IPED\, Jack received a Public Service Assistantship\, interning with the U.S. Mission to the United Nations and U.S. Department of the Treasury. As an international economist\, Jack works within USITC’s Office of Industry and Competitiveness Analysis\, specifically performing research on high-quality\, leading-edge analysis on trade issues surrounding agriculture and fisheries.

DESCRIPTION:This lecture featuring Father Pedro Walpole\, S.J.\, will show how Indigenous people work on sustainable solutions. \nFather Pedro Walpole S.J.\, is the global coordinator of Ecojesuit\, a worldwide Jesuit ecology advocacy network. He is a research director for the Institute of Environmental Science for Social Change and the coordinator for the River Above Asia Oceania Ecclesial Network (RAOEN). He has spent the last 32 years accompanying the Indigenous Pulangiyen people as they take action to restore lands deforested and water springs disrupted by logging companies. \nThis event consists of a 35-40 minute presentation followed by a 15-20 minute Q&A session. DESCRIPTION:​​​​​Peter Lupoff is the founder and principal of Lupoff/Stevens Family Office\, his family’s company for direct and third-party impact investments\, as well as other grant-making\, advisory\, research\, teaching\, and writing activities. He previously served as the CEO of both Net Impact (2019 to 2022) and GOOD Institute (2021 to 2022). Lupoff is a Gabelli fellow at Fordham University. He was a Gabelli School of Business executive in residence from 2018 to 2019. He then earned a B.A.\, with honors\, in philosophy and humanities from the University of Zimbabwe in 2013. After attending the Cisco Networking Academy\, Father Obidiagha served as the IT administrator and head of the Information and Technology Communications Department at Jesuit Memorial College in Nigeria. He is currently a Cybersecurity master’s candidate at Fordham University.

SUMMARY:Fordham Interdisciplinary Seminar Series: Laura Specker Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture from Laura Specker Sullivan\, titled “Situated Personhood: Insights from Caregivers of Minimally Communicative Individuals.” \nFor caregivers of minimally communicative individuals\, providing support in the absence of clearly meaningful responses is ethically fraught. We conducted a secondary analysis of qualitative data from caregivers of individuals who are minimally communicative\, including persons with advanced dementia and individuals with disorders of consciousness. Our analysis led to two central claims: (1) Personhood is a threshold concept that is situated\, relational\, and dynamic; (2) In circumstances in which personhood is difficult to judge\, caregivers can “fill the gap” to reach the threshold through a repertoire of strategies. Because personhood is in part an attribution from others\, a situational loss of personhood does not preclude restoration\, nor does it eliminate moral status. \nAbout the Speaker\nLaura Specker Sullivan is an assistant professor of philosophy. She is a specialist in interdisciplinary and cross-cultural ethics who incorporates her experience in clinical ethics consultation and qualitative research into her philosophical work. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii\, focusing on informed consent in Japan. She is the former director of ethics at the Medical University of South Carolina and a previous assistant professor of philosophy at the College of Charleston. She has held fellowships at the Center for Bioethics at Harvard Medical School\, the Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering at the University of Washington\, Neuroethics Canada at the University of British Columbia\, and the Kokoro Research Center at Kyoto University. \nThis event will take place in a hybrid format and will have live captioning. SUMMARY:IPED Event 2022-2023: Intergral Ecology for Sustainable Development: Case Studies from Kenya and Malawi
DESCRIPTION:This panel will provide valuable insight into the ideals of sustainable development and integral ecology based on their experiences in Kenya and Malawi. Pope Francis\, in his encyclical letter Laudato Si’\, focused on these concepts and stressed the need to safeguard our environment to ensure that while we meet the needs of the present generation\, we also do not compromise the needs of the future generation. The discussion panel will include Endashaw Debrework\, S.J.\, Wendy Omanga\, and Tione Matthews Phwandaphwanda. \nAbout the Speakers\nEndashaw Debrework\, S.J.\, is a Jesuit priest of the eastern Africa province. He is the executive deputy director at Jesuit Hakimani Centre in Nairobi\, Kenya. Hakimani is a Jesuit center for social transformation comprising Uganda\, Tanzania\, Ethiopia\, South Sudan\, Kenya\, and Sudan. At the social center\, Debrework oversees policy dialogue initiatives\, advocacy influencing\, and humanitarian efforts and supports the general implementation of projects. \nWendy Omanga is a youth activist and impact entrepreneur from Nairobi\, Kenya. She is the\nfounder and CEO of Moonlight Initiative\, a commercial forestry nonprofit that seeks to\nrestore riparian ecosystems while also providing an alternative income source to small-scale\nfarmers. Inspired by the social and environmental teachings of Pope Francis\, Omanga is a\nfounding member of the Economy of Francesco’s Africa Hub. \nTione Phwandaphwanda is an environmental specialist and community development\nworker who has been passionately working with the most vulnerable communities for more than\nnine years\, transforming their lives in the face of the impacts of climate change. He is a\nsenior project officer at the Jesuit Center for Ecology and Development (JCED) in Lilongwe\,\nMalawi\, where he works in the center’s resilience-building program.

SUMMARY:IPED Lecture Series 2022-2023: Making Sense of the U.S. Economy Amid High Inflation Rates
DESCRIPTION:Giacomo Santangelo\, Ph.D.\, is a senior lecturer in Fordham’s Department of Economics. He serves as the director of the International Political Economy and Development (IPED) undergraduate program. Santangelo is also a professor at the W. Paul Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University\, where he lectures on economics and quantitative analysis. \nHe is a frequent contributor to multiple publications\, such as Forbes\, and has been featured on various news shows\, such as NBC news and CBS news. In early February\, he was a guest on the Indian Parliamentary News program Global Debate\, discussing the recent trend in tech layoffs.
