DESCRIPTION:Khetha Dlamini is a master’s candidate at the Harvard Kennedy School\, as well as a teaching assistant for the Financial Crises: Concepts and Evidence course at Harvard University. Prior to attending Harvard\, he worked in economic policy in South Africa\, advising senior policymakers and business leaders. He held various positions at the National Treasury of South Africa\, most recently serving as interim chief director of fiscal policy. Dlamini is trained in mathematics and computer science and holds a Master of Commerce degree in economics from the University of the Witwatersrand.

SUMMARY:IPED Event 2022-2023: Intergral Ecology for Sustainable Development: Case Studies from Kenya and Malawi
DESCRIPTION:This panel will provide valuable insight into the ideals of sustainable development and integral ecology based on their experiences in Kenya and Malawi. Pope Francis\, in his encyclical letter Laudato Si’\, focused on these concepts and stressed the need to safeguard our environment to ensure that while we meet the needs of the present generation\, we also do not compromise the needs of the future generation. The discussion panel will include Endashaw Debrework\, S.J.\, Wendy Omanga\, and Tione Matthews Phwandaphwanda. \nAbout the Speakers\nEndashaw Debrework\, S.J.\, is a Jesuit priest of the eastern Africa province. He is the executive deputy director at Jesuit Hakimani Centre in Nairobi\, Kenya. Hakimani is a Jesuit center for social transformation comprising Uganda\, Tanzania\, Ethiopia\, South Sudan\, Kenya\, and Sudan. At the social center\, Debrework oversees policy dialogue initiatives\, advocacy influencing\, and humanitarian efforts and supports the general implementation of projects. \nWendy Omanga is a youth activist and impact entrepreneur from Nairobi\, Kenya. She is the\nfounder and CEO of Moonlight Initiative\, a commercial forestry nonprofit that seeks to\nrestore riparian ecosystems while also providing an alternative income source to small-scale\nfarmers. Inspired by the social and environmental teachings of Pope Francis\, Omanga is a\nfounding member of the Economy of Francesco’s Africa Hub. \nTione Phwandaphwanda is an environmental specialist and community development\nworker who has been passionately working with the most vulnerable communities for more than\nnine years\, transforming their lives in the face of the impacts of climate change. He is a\nsenior project officer at the Jesuit Center for Ecology and Development (JCED) in Lilongwe\,\nMalawi\, where he works in the center’s resilience-building program.

DESCRIPTION:Giacomo Santangelo\, Ph.D.\, is a senior lecturer in Fordham’s Department of Economics. He serves as the director of the International Political Economy and Development (IPED) undergraduate program. Santangelo is also a professor at the W. Paul Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University\, where he lectures on economics and quantitative analysis. \nHe is a frequent contributor to multiple publications\, such as Forbes\, and has been featured on various news shows\, such as NBC news and CBS news. In early February\, he was a guest on the Indian Parliamentary News program Global Debate\, discussing the recent trend in tech layoffs.

DESCRIPTION:Ntombana Mbele is a passionate policy and trade economist whose focus is on demystifying economics and making it an inclusive discipline that speaks to all economic agents. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Johannesburg in economics and industrial policy. \nMbele currently works as an economic and trade advisor at the Embassy of Switzerland in South Africa. Her primary responsibilities include conducting economic research and providing strategic policy advice to the Embassy and the Swiss government in its bilateral relations with South Africa\, Botswana\, Eswatini\, Lesotho\, Mauritius\, and Namibia. \nShe previously worked as a quantamental analyst at UBS Investment Bank South Africa. Mbele also has worked for Investec as a private investment banker; was a junior lecturer at the University of Johannesburg; was an independent economist for BRICS magazine and Business Day; and was a frequent feature on Talk 702\, Radio 2000\, Kaya FM\, and Power FM business shows.

Gembecki also provides strategy for private and public grantmakers to maximize their impact. \nPreviously\, Gembecki served as managing director at Changing Our World\, where he partnered with some of the world’s largest nonprofit organizations to raise hundreds of millions of dollars. DESCRIPTION:Will Spisak is the senior program associate at New Economy Project\, a New York-based nonprofit organization that seeks to build an economy that works for all\, based on cooperation\, equity\, social and racial justice\, and ecological sustainability. At New Economy Project\, Spisak works on policy advocacy campaigns and supports grassroots organizations working to implement new models of economic cooperation in their communities. His work focuses primarily on supporting the development of community land trusts and establishing a municipally owned public bank in New York City. Spisak is a lifelong New Yorker from Queens and has more than a decade of experience working as an organizer\, advocate\, and project manager in the city. In addition to his work in the nonprofit sector\, Spisak is an adjunct instructor teaching in the urban studies departments at CUNY Queens College. He holds a master’s degree from the International Political Economy and Development program at Fordham University and a bachelor’s degree from Queens College.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture on the current state of Turkey with A. Talha Yalta\, professor of economics at TOBB University of Economics and Technology\, Turkey. A visiting scholar in the Department of Economics at Fordham University for the 2022-2023 academic year\, he earned a B.A. in political science and public administration from the Middle East Technical University in 1999 and received his Ph.D. in economics from Fordham in 2007. His main areas of research are macroeconomics and econometrics. His articles have been published in leading journals\, including the International Journal of Forecasting\, Journal of Applied Econometrics\, Energy Economics\, Computational Economics\, and Real Estate Economics. He also co-authored two textbooks\, titled Modern Mikroekonomiye Giriş and Modern Makroekonomiye Giriş in Turkey.

DESCRIPTION:How did New York City’s transportation fare during COVID-19? Why is it important to forecast it? During this lecture\, Matthew Jacobs will discuss forecasting NYC transportation during the pandemic. Among its umbrella mandates\, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is tasked with ensuring the smooth and safe transportation of the states’ residents. \nAs for our speaker\, he has been with the organization for more than five years now as a senior economic analyst. An economist for more than 20 years\, he has had previous stints with the Asian Development Bank\, A. Gary Shilling & Co. Inc.\, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority\, and the Louis Berger Group. Experienced in both quantitative and qualitative analysis\, he specializes in transportation economics and finance. He holds an M.A. in international political economy and development from Fordham University.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us in welcoming Amanda Larson as she talks about Carter Center’s Guinea Worm Eradication Program (GWEP). The Carter Center is a nongovernmental organization dedicated to improving people’s lives through preventing diseases\, advancing democracy\, and resolving conflicts. GWEP aims to completely eradicate the Guinea worm disease through the cooperation of local governments and multilateral organizations. \nLarson has been with the organization as both a technical adviser and recruitment consultant since 2019. She has more than seven years of experience in project and program management\, and monitoring and evaluation systems\, with previous stints in Malawi and Chad. She has an M.A. in international policy and development from Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey and a B.A. in sociology from UC Santa Barbara. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
