SUMMARY:Enterprise Applications of AI: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Tired of the GenAI hype? So are many businesses! While they will commit to spending more than a trillion dollars on AI applications in the coming years\, new and truly transformative applications have yet to emerge. In contrast\, the potential risks and concerns regarding AI—from unethical use\, to invasion of privacy\, to the possibility of industrial or military catastrophes—are increasingly becoming part of social and political debate. \nWhere will businesses find true AI-led transformation? What capabilities beyond foundation models do we need to build in-house in order to exploit the full potential of AI? Will AI lead to further inequalities within and across countries? What are some challenges businesses will face as AI legislation takes shape\, and how can we avert risk and potential disaster? \nJoin us for a provocative and enlightening panel discussion with industry experts. This event is presented by the Center for Digitial Transformation at the Fordham University Gabelli School of Business. \nA reception will follow.

SUMMARY:The Good Business that Comes from Good Business Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join the Gabelli School of Business for a consortium of sustainable business\, finance\, and impact investing professionals exploring the material gains and benefits in seeking measurable social\, climate\, and economic returns. \nThe Responsible Business Center and the Fordham University Gabelli School of Business believe that there is ”Good Business that Comes from Good Business\,“ that is\, that much of the recent public discussion around ESG and corporate sustainability misses the longer-term logical\, attainable objectives of business operating for a just and sustainable planet and profit. Businesses increasingly operate considering all stakeholders: consumers\, employees\, the communities where they operate\, and investors. This is because it’s logical good business to consider all stakeholders. It’s not just the right thing to do; there are significant opportunities in business’ transition to positively impacting people and planet. \nRegistration for this event is $15.

SUMMARY:MUSH: A Conversation with Ashley Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with Ashley Thompson\, the founder of MUSH. \nThompson will be discussing her journey as an entrepreneur and sharing what she has learned—from the initial spark she had while working on Wall Street\, to selling her products in cartons at farmers markets\, all the way to the nation’s top retailers. Thompson is an incredible success story of what hard work and the right business strategies can do for you. \nThompson co-founded MUSH in 2015 with the conviction that easy\, delicious\, and nutritious food can elevate the world in powerful ways. Early in life\, Thompson’s sister was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The experience left an indelible mark on her\, and she cultivated a strong belief that better outcomes begin with better food. She began her career as a trading analyst and started each day with a run. Thompson soon realized that\, even on Wall Street\, it was hard to access nutritious food\, so she would bring her own “mush” to work\, inspired by her favorite hack as a kid: cereal and oatmeal soaked in milk. She had discovered a white space that was equal parts healthy\, delicious\, and convenient. She quit her job and got to work. \nThe company has grown rapidly from its early days when Thompson would sell small handmade batches at local farmers’ markets in San Diego. Today\, MUSH is the leading brand in its category. \nComplimentary MUSH will be provided to all participants.

SUMMARY:A Catholic Reckoning on Slavery: Rachel Swarns on The 272: The Families Who Were Enslaved and Sold to Build the American Catholic Church
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Swarns is a journalist\, scholar\, and Black Catholic from Staten Island whose groundbreaking reporting and research illuminates the harrowing origin story of the Catholic Church in America\, which relied on slave labor and slave sales to sustain its operations and help fuel its expansion. \nThe article she first wrote for The New York Times in 2016—about the prominent Jesuit priests who sold 272 people to save Georgetown University from bankruptcy—would become the seed of her new book\, The 272: The Families Who Were Enslaved and Sold to Build the American Catholic Church. Her work has helped spark the movement for reparations and reconciliation in America—and in the Catholic Church. \nProfessor Swarns will talk about her book\, about what the Church—and the United States—must do to help heal our racial divides\, and about what this project has meant for her own faith. \nDavid Gibson\, director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate a discussion after the talk\, including questions from the audience. \nSwarns will be available to sign a limited number of books following the program. \nThis lecture is made possible by the Russo Family Foundation in memory of Wanda and Robert Russo Sr.\, M.D.\, FCRH ‘39.

SUMMARY:How Did We Get Here?: A Deep Dive into the History of Israel and Palestine
DESCRIPTION:The Hamas-engineered massacre of October 7 stunned and shocked Israel and the Jewish world to the core. It triggered a massive Israeli response that has reduced large parts of northern Gaza to rubble. Supporters of Israel and the Palestinians are more bitterly divided than ever\, around the world and especially on college campuses. What are the roots of today’s conflict? And what does it portend for the future of the region? \nTo gain insight into this latest stage in a brutal and divisive conflict that has ebbed and flowed for more than a century\, Fordham University’s Center for Jewish Studies is sponsoring a four-part series on the history of the conflict with Hussein Ibish\, Ph.D.\, and professor David Myers. During the 2017-2018 academic year\, Ibish and Myers came to campus to deliver a three-part series on the history of this conflict. Five years later\, they return to Fordham to offer an in-depth perspective on the history of Israel-Palestine in light of the current moment. \nSchedule \n\nWednesday\, December 6 | Part 1: Arabs and Jews: 1882–1948 (in person)\nDate TBD | Part 2: Israel and Arab States: 1948–1979 (Zoom)\nDate TBD | Part 3: Israelis and Palestinians: 1979–2023 (Zoom)\nTuesday\, March 19\, 2024\, 6 p.m. | Part 4: October 7: The Aftermath (in person)\n\nA set of readings will be shared before each program. \nAbout the Speakers\nHussein Ibish is a senior resident scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington. SUMMARY:2023 Economos Orthodoxy in America Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Nadieszda Kizenko will deliver the 2023 Economos Orthodoxy in America Lecture\, ‘‘A Vanishing Point: Unity in Orthodoxy and the Ukraine Crisis.” \nUntil recently\, it was possible to describe Orthodoxy as “unity in plurality.” Although Orthodoxy consisted of more than a dozen local churches with a wide variety of local practices\, and without an overarching structure\, body\, or person\, it was still possible to say that Orthodoxy was a relatively well-functioning church—indeed\, one church. \nIn the last decades\, and especially the last decade\, however\, profound fissures have undermined that unity. The Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church in Crete\, the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s granting of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine\, and Russia’s full-scale attack on Ukraine: All have exposed deeper fault lines in world Orthodoxy. These include issues of church and state (symphonia)\, church and nation\, how to achieve consensus\, authority in the church\, how one approaches history\, and the attitude to human rights and to modernity in general. How can Orthodoxy face these challenges? \nKizenko\, a historian of Orthodox Christianity in Russia and Ukraine\, will examine this question from a historical perspective and consider how Orthodox Christianity can move forward.

SUMMARY:Dracula: Medieval Hero and Modern Vampire
DESCRIPTION:Dracula—the vampire count—has been a popular cultural mainstay portrayed in films\, television shows\, novels\, and comic books for more than a century. The modern fascination with Dracula began in the 1920s and 1930s with the success of plays and movies based on Bram Stoker’s eponymous novel\, first published in 1897. \nThe events described in Stoker’s Dracula take place in fin-de-siècle London and Transylvania\, and the novel makes only loose historical references to its 15th-century namesake: Vlad III “the Impaler” (1431–c. 1476)\, prince of Wallachia\, now a region of Romania. The massive popularity of the fictional Dracula has generated considerable curiosity about the real-life prince himself\, his brutal reign\, and his times. \nIn this lecture\, Dr. Alice Isabella Sullivan will examine the transformations of the historical figure into a modern vampire and the tireless allure of Dracula for creators and audiences. \nPanelists \nAlice Isabella Sullivan is an assistant professor of medieval art and architecture and the director of graduate studies at Tufts University\, specializing in Eastern European and Byzantine-Slavic art history. She is the author of the recently published The Eclectic Visual Culture of Medieval Moldavia. \nDavid J. Goodwin\, the assistant director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture and the author of the forthcoming Midnight Rambles: H. P. Lovecraft in Gotham\, will moderate a conversation with the audience.

SUMMARY:Financial Issues Forum: Nobel Laureate Edmund Phelps on My Journeys in Economic Theory
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an in-person event with one of the most important economists of his generation. Edmund Phelps developed a new understanding of unemployment and inflation and went on to rethink the roots of innovation. His work represents a lifelong project to put “people as we know them” into economic theory. \nIn his latest book\, Phelps tells the story of his role in reshaping economic theory\, offering a powerful personal account of a creative and rewarding career. My Journeys in Economic Theory charts two major phases of Phelps’s work\, illuminating the breadth of his contributions to the field. First\, introducing the expectations of wage setters and cofounding the “equilibrium” rate of unemployment\, he built the microeconomic foundations for the employment theory pioneered by Keynes and Hicks. More recently\, he conceived a theory of “mass flourishing” superseding Schumpeter and Solow’s conception of the process of innovating—a theory in which individuals’ creativity and society’s dynamism fuel grassroots innovation and generate job satisfaction in the process. \nPhelps recounts his vivid experiences in the world of economics—fierce arguments\, competition and collaboration\, and the good fortune of time spent among some great figures—as well as his relationships with luminaries such as John Rawls\, Thomas Nagel\, Paul Samuelson\, and Paul Volcker. At its core\, this book shares the joy of intellectual achievement: the excitement of coming up with a new idea that radically departs from prevailing views and the satisfaction of exercising one’s own ingenuity instead of applying or developing others’ models. Telling the story of a life packed with intellectual adventure\, My Journeys in Economic Theory provides a profound vision of a dynamic\, modern economy that offers lives rich with creativity and meaning. \nAbout the Speaker\nEdmund Phelps\, the winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2006\, is the founding director of the Center on Capitalism and Society and McVickar professor emeritus of Political Economy at Columbia University. \nAdvance registration is required\, and space is limited.

SUMMARY:An Integral Ethic of Solidarity: Cardinal Blase Cupich on the Enduring Legacy of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin
DESCRIPTION:Forty years after Cardinal Bernardin’s landmark speech at Fordham University in which he set out a “consistent ethic of life\,” his successor as Archbishop of Chicago continues to broaden the conversation first begun in 1983. \nThe timing of this talk could not be more propitious: Pope Francis has been promoting a “seamless garment” view of Catholic teaching throughout his decade-long pontificate\, arguing that all life is sacred and that Catholics cannot prioritize one issue at the expense of others. Moreover\, the Dobbs decision created a new landscape regarding abortion\, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is set to debate an updated version of its guide for Catholic voters ahead of next year’s elections. \nIn this talk\, Cardinal Blase Cupich will amplify the vision of both the pope and Cardinal Bernardin\, setting it in the contemporary American context and pointing toward a path beyond the culture wars. \nCardinal Cupich was appointed the ninth Archbishop of Chicago by Pope Francis in 2014\, and the pope elevated him to the College of Cardinals in November 2016. \nDavid Gibson\, director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate a discussion after the talk\, including questions from the audience.

SUMMARY:Remembering: Talking About the Holocaust in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Fordham University and the Under-Told Stories Project of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota\, in partnership with the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York\, invite you to a special observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. \nRecent surveys have shown steadily diminishing public awareness of the Holocaust amid a rise in disinformation and revisionism. This panel of leading thinkers will discuss how media\, educators\, religious institutions\, and governments can fight Holocaust denial and deepen understanding of the genocide. What is the role of allies? \nThe discussion will begin with a screening of Fred de Sam Lazaro’s 2022 PBS NewsHour segment on the children’s book Nicky & Vera: A Quiet Hero of the Holocaust and the Children He Rescued. Written and illustrated by Peter Sís\, it tells the story of Nicholas Winton\, the “British Schindler\,” who helped 669 children escape Czechoslovakia just before Nazi occupation. \nThe panelists will delve into the conditions that allowed the ripening and spread of antisemitism in the years leading up to the Holocaust\, and they will bring home the relevance of those circumstances today. \nModerators \n\nFred de Sam Lazaro\, correspondent/director\, The Under-Told Stories Project\nPeter Osnos\, founder\, PublicAffairs Books\n\nPanelists \n\nJudy Woodruff\, anchor\, PBS NewsHour\nMagda Teter\, Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studies\, Fordham University\nJames Loeffler\, Jay Berkowitz Professor of Jewish History\, University of Virginia\nLinda Kinstler\, author\, Come to This Court and Cry: How the Holocaust Ends\n\nSpecial Guest: Eva Paddock\, Educator and One of “Winton’s Children” Rescued from Czechoslovakia on the Eve of World War II \nA reception will follow the discussion at 7 p.m.

SUMMARY:Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Ian Johnson on "China’s New Civil Religion: A Challenge and Opportunity for the West"
DESCRIPTION:When outsiders think of religion in China\, they tend to focus on persecution; for example\, Muslims in Xinjiang or Christians in many big Chinese cities. While that is true for some faiths\, China is in the midst of a religious boom\, one that the government is trying to use to further its grip on power. \nIn this lecture\, Ian Johnson\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Souls of China: The Return of Religion After Mao\, argues that as the Chinese Communist Party seeks to maintain its hold on power\, authorities are building something similar to the American “civil religion” that Robert Bellah described half a century ago. Johnson will discuss how Beijing is combining patriotism with local faiths\, especially Buddhism\, Taoism\, and folk religion. But\, he asks\, can authoritarianism and religious life coexist? What are the risks as the Beijing government embraces some religions while opposing others? \nThis presentation and audience conversation could not come at a more critical time\, as China is vying for prominence on the world stage with the United States while also keeping an eye on growing unrest at home. Both globally and domestically\, religion is once again at the center of questions about China’s future. \nJohnson lived and studied in China for more than 20 years and now works at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City\, where he researches social trends in China. \nDavid Gibson\, director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate a discussion after the talk\, including questions from the audience. \nThis event is co-organized with the U.S.-China Catholic Association.

SUMMARY:The Ongoing Challenges for All Women and Girls During a Time of Unrest: A Human Rights Perspective
DESCRIPTION:As society continues to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and other world events\, it is beneficial to take a closer look at the new challenges that women and girls face during these times\, and how interventions have been altered to fit the present moment. \nJoin us for a discussion during which a panel of experts will identify improvements and interventions that have been implemented and created to meet the needs of women and girls\, so that we may continue to build upon them and establish those ideas in different settings. This conversation is necessary for all audiences\, but particularly for healthcare providers\, social workers\, and other professionals. \nWe hope this discussion will bring an overall awareness to these ongoing challenges and lead you to discover how facing difficulties at a young age can influence girls’ development in all contexts throughout their lifespan. \nNote: This event will also be via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Good Night Oppy
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning director Ryan White (The Keepers\, Serena\, The Case Against 8) will join Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture’s David Gibson for a screening and a discussion of White’s acclaimed new documentary: Good Night Oppy. \nGood Night Oppy tells the true story of Opportunity\, a rover sent to Mars for a 90-day mission that ended up surviving for 15 years. The film follows Opportunity’s groundbreaking journey on Mars and the remarkable bond forged between the robot and her humans millions of miles away. \nThe film raises powerful issues about our relationship with machines and our place in the universe\, and it may point to the ways that science and religion—and a shared sense of wonder—can find common ground. \nReserve a ticket using the password OPPYFORD.
