SUMMARY:Remembering: Talking About the Holocaust in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Fordham University and the Under-Told Stories Project of the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota\, in partnership with the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York\, invite you to a special observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day. \nRecent surveys have shown steadily diminishing public awareness of the Holocaust amid a rise in disinformation and revisionism. This panel of leading thinkers will discuss how media\, educators\, religious institutions\, and governments can fight Holocaust denial and deepen understanding of the genocide. What is the role of allies? \nThe discussion will begin with a screening of Fred de Sam Lazaro’s 2022 PBS NewsHour segment on the children’s book Nicky & Vera: A Quiet Hero of the Holocaust and the Children He Rescued. Written and illustrated by Peter Sís\, it tells the story of Nicholas Winton\, the “British Schindler\,” who helped 669 children escape Czechoslovakia just before Nazi occupation. \nThe panelists will delve into the conditions that allowed the ripening and spread of antisemitism in the years leading up to the Holocaust\, and they will bring home the relevance of those circumstances today. \nModerators \n\nFred de Sam Lazaro\, correspondent/director\, The Under-Told Stories Project\nPeter Osnos\, founder\, PublicAffairs Books\n\nPanelists \n\nJudy Woodruff\, anchor\, PBS NewsHour\nMagda Teter\, Shvidler Chair in Judaic Studies\, Fordham University\nJames Loeffler\, Jay Berkowitz Professor of Jewish History\, University of Virginia\nLinda Kinstler\, author\, Come to This Court and Cry: How the Holocaust Ends\n\nSpecial Guest: Eva Paddock\, Educator and One of “Winton’s Children” Rescued from Czechoslovakia on the Eve of World War II \nA reception will follow the discussion at 7 p.m.

SUMMARY:Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Ian Johnson on "China’s New Civil Religion: A Challenge and Opportunity for the West"
DESCRIPTION:When outsiders think of religion in China\, they tend to focus on persecution; for example\, Muslims in Xinjiang or Christians in many big Chinese cities. While that is true for some faiths\, China is in the midst of a religious boom\, one that the government is trying to use to further its grip on power. \nIn this lecture\, Ian Johnson\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Souls of China: The Return of Religion After Mao\, argues that as the Chinese Communist Party seeks to maintain its hold on power\, authorities are building something similar to the American “civil religion” that Robert Bellah described half a century ago. Johnson will discuss how Beijing is combining patriotism with local faiths\, especially Buddhism\, Taoism\, and folk religion. But\, he asks\, can authoritarianism and religious life coexist? What are the risks as the Beijing government embraces some religions while opposing others? \nThis presentation and audience conversation could not come at a more critical time\, as China is vying for prominence on the world stage with the United States while also keeping an eye on growing unrest at home. Both globally and domestically\, religion is once again at the center of questions about China’s future. \nJohnson lived and studied in China for more than 20 years and now works at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City\, where he researches social trends in China. \nDavid Gibson\, director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate a discussion after the talk\, including questions from the audience. \nThis event is co-organized with the U.S.-China Catholic Association.

SUMMARY:The Ongoing Challenges for All Women and Girls During a Time of Unrest: A Human Rights Perspective
DESCRIPTION:As society continues to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and other world events\, it is beneficial to take a closer look at the new challenges that women and girls face during these times\, and how interventions have been altered to fit the present moment. \nJoin us for a discussion during which a panel of experts will identify improvements and interventions that have been implemented and created to meet the needs of women and girls\, so that we may continue to build upon them and establish those ideas in different settings. This conversation is necessary for all audiences\, but particularly for healthcare providers\, social workers\, and other professionals. \nWe hope this discussion will bring an overall awareness to these ongoing challenges and lead you to discover how facing difficulties at a young age can influence girls’ development in all contexts throughout their lifespan. \nNote: This event will also be via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Good Night Oppy
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning director Ryan White (The Keepers\, Serena\, The Case Against 8) will join Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture’s David Gibson for a screening and a discussion of White’s acclaimed new documentary: Good Night Oppy. \nGood Night Oppy tells the true story of Opportunity\, a rover sent to Mars for a 90-day mission that ended up surviving for 15 years. The film follows Opportunity’s groundbreaking journey on Mars and the remarkable bond forged between the robot and her humans millions of miles away. \nThe film raises powerful issues about our relationship with machines and our place in the universe\, and it may point to the ways that science and religion—and a shared sense of wonder—can find common ground. \nReserve a ticket using the password OPPYFORD.

SUMMARY:New Nukes and New Risks: The Peril of Nuclear Weapons in an Unstable World
DESCRIPTION:Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has pushed the threat of nuclear destruction back onto the front pages and into our collective consciousness. In reality\, that threat had never gone away but had been superseded in the public mind by such crises as climate change and political turmoil elsewhere. \nThis discussion among leading experts on nuclear weapons will gauge the risks the world faces today and\, in particular\, what Catholic peacemaking efforts—led by Pope Francis—can do. The event follows the recent United Nations review of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the annual General Assembly of the U.N.\, which spotlighted the nuclear threat. \nOur panel includes a former high-ranking NATO official\, a diplomat from Mexico who specializes in international law\, a Catholic University of America ethicist\, and the Vatican’s representative to the United Nations\, who will outline the contributions Pope Francis is making to the push for a non-nuclear future. \nPanelists \nRose Gottemoeller is the former deputy secretary general of NATO and served nearly five years as the U.S. Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security. She is currently a lecturer at the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University. \nMaryann Cusimano Love is an associate professor of international relations at the Catholic University of America. She has written widely on the ethics of war and weaponry and advises both the U.S. government and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on foreign policy issues. \nJuan Manuel Gómez-Robledo is the deputy permanent representative of Mexico to the United Nations and a member of the U.N.’s International Law Commission. He has extensive experience in disarmament issues. \nArchbishop Gabriele Caccia was named by Pope Francis to serve as the Holy See’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations in November 2019. He is a priest of the Archdiocese of Milan who has served the Vatican in many diplomatic posts around the world. \nDavid Gibson\, director of Fordham’s Center on Religion and Culture\, will moderate the discussion\, including questions from the audience. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Catholic Peacebuilding Network and the Project on Revitalizing Catholic Engagement on Nuclear Disarmament. \n

SUMMARY:CANCELED: Red State\, Blue City: A Front Row Look at ‘Back Row America’
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2020 Russo Family Lecture. \nA panel of powerful writers with first-hand knowledge of working-class people in hardscrabble communities across America share their stories and experiences of one of the most iconic and misunderstood segments of U.S. society. \nThe white\, rural\, Trump supporter has become a caricature that distorts and obscures reality. In fact\, many in our overstressed underclass are not white. They live in cities like New York as well as in the heartland. They may support Trump—or no one in particular. They are alienated from a society that has little use for them\, except as a convenient talking point. \nIn this discussion\, journalists\, memoirists\, and a historian explore the economic and social devastation\, and the faith and culture\, of what Chris Arnade calls “back row America.” \nPanelists: \nChris Arnade is the author of Dignity: Seeking Respect in Back Row America\, a series of photo essays and true stories illuminating inequality and addiction from the Bronx to California. \nMonica Potts is an Arkansas-based writer working on a book about the women of her rural hometown. She wrote a 2019 New York Times essay about her neighbors’ “go-it-alone mythology” and “Donald Trump’s unbeatable appeal.” \nSteven Stoll\, Ph.D.\, a Fordham history professor and author of Ramp Hollow: The Ordeal of Appalachia\, will moderate the discussion. \nA reception and book signing will follow the event.

SUMMARY:CANCELED: The Future of Conservatism: From Edmund Burke to Donald Trump to … What’s Next?
DESCRIPTION:What is conservatism today? \nThe election of Donald Trump ended the old “fusionism” alliance of free markets\, family values\, fiscal discipline and an assertive foreign policy. Arguments about populism and nationalism\, trade wars and moral rationalizing now dominate conservative discourse and the Republican Party. \nThe debate is intense. The stakes are high. The future is unclear. \nProminent young conservatives will discuss how conservatism came to this pass\, whether it’s a good or bad development\, and where conservatism — and the GOP — are heading\, regardless if Trump wins or loses in November. \nPanelists: \nGuy Benson\, political editor at Townhall.com\, Fox News contributor\, and author (End of Discussion: How the Left’s Outrage Industry Shuts Down Debate\, Manipulates Voters\, and Makes America Less Free (and Fun)) \nMary Katharine Ham\, contributing editor at Townhall.com\, a widely-published conservative columnist\, and author (End of Discussion: How the Left’s Outrage Industry Shuts Down Debate\, Manipulates Voters\, and Makes America Less Free (and Fun)) \nMatt K. Lewis\, senior columnist at The Daily Beast\, CNN political commentator\, and author (Too Dumb to Fail: How the GOP Went from the Party of Reagan to the Party of Trump) \nApril Ponnuru\, veteran Republican staffer and strategist and senior advisor to the Conservative Reform Network. She has written widely and directed the publication of Room to Grow: Conservative Reforms for a Limited Government and a Thriving Middle Class. \nModerator: \nBria Sandford\, editorial director at Sentinel publishing and editor of numerous conservative authors. \nReception will follow the event.

SUMMARY:CANCELED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE: Mervyn King and Rana Foroohar on ‘Radical Uncertainty: Decision-Making Beyond the Numbers’
DESCRIPTION:Some uncertainties are resolvable. The insurance industry’s actuarial tables and the gambler’s roulette wheel both yield to the tools of probability theory. Most situations in life\, however\, involve a deeper kind of uncertainty\, a radical uncertainty for which historical data provide no useful guidance to future outcomes. Radical uncertainty concerns events whose determinants are insufficiently understood for probabilities to be known or forecasting possible. Before President Barack Obama made the fateful decision to send in the Navy Seals\, his advisers offered him wildly divergent estimates of the odds that Osama bin Laden would be in the Abbottabad compound. In 2000\, no one—not least Steve Jobs—knew what a smartphone was; how could anyone have predicted how many would be sold in 2020? And financial advisers who confidently provide the information required in the standard retirement planning package—what will interest rates\, the cost of living\, and your state of health be in 2050?—demonstrate only that their advice is worthless. \nThe limits of certainty demonstrate the power of human judgment over artificial intelligence. In most critical decisions there can be no forecasts or probability distributions on which we might sensibly rely. Instead of inventing numbers to fill the gaps in our knowledge\, we should adopt business\, political\, and personal strategies that will be robust to alternative futures and resilient to unpredictable events. Within the security of such a robust and resilient reference narrative\, uncertainty can be embraced\, because it is the source of creativity\, excitement\, and profit. \nAbout the speakers:\nMervyn King\, former governor of the Bank of England\, is a professor at New York University and emeritus professor at the London School of Economics. He is the author of Radical Uncertainty and The End of Alchemy\, among other books. King will be interviewed by Rana Foroohar\, the global business columnist and an associate editor at the Financial Times. She is also CNN’s global economic analyst and the author of Makers and Takers: The Rise of Finance and the Fall of American Business. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Museum of American Finance. \nConversation followed by Q&A and reception. Registration opens at 5:30 p.m. The first 100 attendees will receive a copy of the book.

SUMMARY:Gregory Zuckerman on ‘The Unlikely Story of How Jim Simons Solved the Market’
DESCRIPTION:Jim Simons is the greatest moneymaker in modern financial history. No other investor can touch his record. Since 1988\, Renaissance’s signature Medallion fund has generated average annual returns of 66%. The firm has earned profits of more than $100 billion—Simons is worth $23 billion. \nDrawing on unprecedented access to Simons and dozens of current and former employees\, Zuckerman\, a veteran Wall Street Journal investigative reporter\, tells the gripping story of how a world-class mathematician and former code breaker mastered the market. Simons pioneered a data-driven\, algorithmic approach that’s sweeping the world. Zuckerman’s most recent book\, The Man Who Solved the Market\, is a portrait of a modern-day Midas who remade markets in his own image\, but failed to anticipate how his success would impact his firm and his country. It’s also a story of what Simons’s revolution means for the rest of us. \nAbout the Author\nGregory Zuckerman is the author of The Greatest Trade Ever and The Frackers\, and is a special writer at the Wall Street Journal. At the Journal\, Zuckerman writes about financial firms\, personalities\, and trades\, as well as hedge funds and other investing and business topics. He’s a three-time winner of the Gerald Loeb award\, the highest honor in business journalism. Zuckerman also appears regularly on CNBC\, Fox Business\, and other networks and radio stations around the globe. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Museum of American Finance. \nTalk followed by Q&A and reception. Registration opens at 5:30 p.m. The first 100 attendees will receive a copy of the book.

SUMMARY:Vipassana Meditation with Dr. Paul Fleischman
DESCRIPTION:In his eighth annual visit to New York City\, Dr. Paul R. Fleischman\, author\, psychiatrist\, and Vipassana meditation teacher in the tradition of S.N. Goenka\, will be giving a public talk called\, “Vipassana Meditation—A Practical and Spiritual Path.” This event will be organized by the Fordham South Asian Business Association and\nNew York Vipassana Association. \nDr. Fleischman will discuss Vipassana meditation\, which in the tradition of S.N. Goenka is taught in free\, donation-funded\, ten-day residential retreats. It combines a focus upon practical\, cognitive\, and emotional skills for living life with equanimity\, along with an additional emphasis on a spiritual path that echoes the teachings of the Buddha. Students on a ten-day retreat are challenged to observe themselves as minds and bodies\, which can be trained to live with greater peace and harmony. They also are guided towards the values of pro-social living\, and activities that contribute to more widespread availability of meditation in the contemporary world. Vipassana is both useful and a doorway to an inspired daily practice. \nThe talk will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A session where Dr. Fleischman will answer questions from audience members. \nAbout Dr. Paul R. Fleischman\nDr. Paul R. Fleischman was chief resident in psychiatry at Yale University\, where he also taught a seminar on psychiatry and religion. He is the author of numerous books and articles\, including Cultivating Inner Peace\, Karma and Chaos\, and Wonder: When and Why the World Appears Radiant. He was honored by the American Psychiatric Association for “unique contributions to the study of psychiatry and religion.” Dr. Fleischman has practiced Vipassana meditation since 1974. He and his wife\, Susan Fleischman\, were appointed Vipassana teachers by Mr. S.N. Goenka\, to explain meditation in the West. Some of his lectures and podcasts are available at pariyatti.org/paul. \nAbout Vipassana Meditation:\nVipassana is an ancient Indian technique of meditation that is now taught for free in ten-day residential courses. Vipassana leads its practitioners towards deep insights about the ultimate reality of one’s own body\, mind\, and self. For more information\, visit dhamma.org or contact gsbsaba@fordham.edu.

SUMMARY:‘In Money We Trust?’ Film Screening and Conversation with Steve Forbes and Elizabeth Ames
DESCRIPTION:In Money We Trust? is an illuminating one-hour public television documentary that answers the question\, “what is money?” In a narrative that begins in ancient times and takes us to the present day\, the film explains how\, 2\,500 years ago\, the invention of money provided a shared measure of value that facilitated trade and cooperation between strangers. Sound\, trustworthy money has throughout history fueled great human achievement—from the emergence of philosophy to the high-tech revolution. The program also explores the destructive consequences that ensue when inflation or other forms of instability cause money not to be trusted. In the most extreme instances\, such as in Weimar Germany or present-day Venezuela\, the economy—and social order—collapses. \nAbout the Speakers \nSteve Forbes is chairman and editor-in-chief of Forbes Media\, which publishes Forbes Magazine. Combined with Forbes Asia\, and the company’s licensee editions\, the magazine reaches over six million global readers. Forbes.com reaches over 65 million unique monthly visitors. Forbes products include iconic lists such as the Forbes 400 and Forbes Global Billionaires\, its noteworthy Women’s Summit and its 30 Under 30 lists and conferences that celebrate young achievers from around the world. He has written or co-authored numerous  books\, is a contributor to countless other publications\, and appears regularly on cable and broadcast outlets. \nElizabeth Ames is writer and co-producer of In Money We Trust?\, as well as producer of the film’s website\, InMoneyWeTrust.org. Ames has co-authored four books with Steve Forbes including Money: How the Destruction of the Dollar Threatens the Global Economy—and What We Can Do About It\, which is the basis of the documentary.

SUMMARY:Women Deacons: One Year On
DESCRIPTION:Over a year ago\, members of a Vatican commission charged with studying the possibility of the admission of women to the diaconate submitted their report to Pope Francis. Two commission members spoke at Fordham in January 2019. But the Vatican has yet to issue a definitive response\, and many are finding the question symbolic of the Catholic Church’s treatment of women overall. \nJoin Fordham’s Department of Theology\, Orthodox Christian Studies Center\, and Center on Religion and Culture for a follow-up conversation featuring papal commission member Phyllis Zagano\, TMC ’69\, Catholic feminist theologian Meghan J. Clark\, FCRH ‘03\, and theology professor and co-director of Fordham’s Orthodox Christian Studies Center\, George Demacopoulos. The panel will share the latest developments in the conversations about women deacons in the Catholic Church and beyond.

SUMMARY:Does Faith Have a Future? A Symposium on God\, Religion\, and the ‘Nones’
DESCRIPTION:“None of the above” is the fastest-growing religious identifier in the United States\, a category boosted by a surge of younger people. This generational shift is the greatest challenge facing religious communities\, and one with enormous implications for American society: the “Nones” have fewer social connections and less social capital than their parents and grandparents. \nWhat does this disaffiliation mean for the future of the U.S.? What does it mean for the future of faith? Who are the “Nones” anyway? Are they atheists? Agnostics? Just indifferent? “The ‘Meh’ Generation?” Or does their attitude point toward a new path for traditional religious communities? \nParticipants include: \nKaya Oakes has written widely on religion in the contemporary world\, including her book\, The Nones Are Alright: A New Generation of Seekers\, Believers\, and Those In Between. She writes for America\, Commonweal\, and other publications and websites. \nTara Isabella Burton is a New York-based novelist (Social Creature) who writes widely on religion. Her next book\, Strange Rites: New Religions for a Godless World\, will be published in spring 2020. \nRyan Burge\, an American Baptist Church pastor\, is an assistant professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University and has published widely in academic journals and popular news outlets about the next generation of believers—and nonbelievers.
