She is the 67th president and the first woman to lead the NYSE Group in its 227-year history. \nMost recently\, she was the COO of NYSE\, where she was responsible for NYSE’s five equity markets and two options markets\, leading the company’s strategy for its equities\, equity derivatives\, and ETF businesses. Prior to serving as COO\, Cunningham was president of NYSE Governance Services and served as head of sales and relationship management at NYSE. Before joining NYSE\, Cunningham held several senior positions at Nasdaq. \nCunningham began her career on the NYSE trading floor\, where she served as a specialist. \nCunningham earned her B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Lehigh University. \nAbout the Moderator: \nDoreen Mogavero was founder and CEO of Mogavero\, Lee & Co.\, Inc.\, the first and only floor-based\, direct access firm to be wholly owned and operated by women. Day Inc. and then working for Ivan F. Boesky and Co. She was a clerk on the American Stock Exchange\, then a member of the New York Futures Exchange in 1979\, and then in 1980\, went on to become the 12th woman in history to become a member of the prestigious New York Stock Exchange. Mogavero bought her seat in 1994 and was the second woman to buy her seat on the Exchange with funds earned working on the trading floor. \nHer list of “firsts” are many\, most notably\, she was the first female member from the New York Stock Exchange trading floor to be appointed to a board position in 2003 as a member of the Board of Executives. Her work in financial literacy for students was recognized in 2009 by Wright State University resulting in an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. SUMMARY:Women Deacons: One Year On
DESCRIPTION:Over a year ago\, members of a Vatican commission charged with studying the possibility of the admission of women to the diaconate submitted their report to Pope Francis. Two commission members spoke at Fordham in January 2019. But the Vatican has yet to issue a definitive response\, and many are finding the question symbolic of the Catholic Church’s treatment of women overall. \nJoin Fordham’s Department of Theology\, Orthodox Christian Studies Center\, and Center on Religion and Culture for a follow-up conversation featuring papal commission member Phyllis Zagano\, TMC ’69\, Catholic feminist theologian Meghan J. Clark\, FCRH ‘03\, and theology professor and co-director of Fordham’s Orthodox Christian Studies Center\, George Demacopoulos. The panel will share the latest developments in the conversations about women deacons in the Catholic Church and beyond.

SUMMARY:Does Faith Have a Future? A Symposium on God\, Religion\, and the ‘Nones’
DESCRIPTION:“None of the above” is the fastest-growing religious identifier in the United States\, a category boosted by a surge of younger people. This generational shift is the greatest challenge facing religious communities\, and one with enormous implications for American society: the “Nones” have fewer social connections and less social capital than their parents and grandparents. \nWhat does this disaffiliation mean for the future of the U.S.? What does it mean for the future of faith? Who are the “Nones” anyway? Are they atheists? Agnostics? Just indifferent? “The ‘Meh’ Generation?” Or does their attitude point toward a new path for traditional religious communities? \nParticipants include: \nKaya Oakes has written widely on religion in the contemporary world\, including her book\, The Nones Are Alright: A New Generation of Seekers\, Believers\, and Those In Between. She writes for America\, Commonweal\, and other publications and websites. \nTara Isabella Burton is a New York-based novelist (Social Creature) who writes widely on religion. Her next book\, Strange Rites: New Religions for a Godless World\, will be published in spring 2020. \nRyan Burge\, an American Baptist Church pastor\, is an assistant professor of political science at Eastern Illinois University and has published widely in academic journals and popular news outlets about the next generation of believers—and nonbelievers.

SUMMARY:James Grant on “Bagehot: The Life and Times of the Greatest Victorian”
DESCRIPTION:During the upheavals of 2007–2009\, the Federal Reserve chairman had the name of a Victorian icon on the tip of his tongue: Walter Bagehot. Banker\, man of letters\, inventor of the Treasury bill and author of Lombard Street\, the still-canonical guide to stopping a run on the banks\, Bagehot prescribed the doctrines that―decades later―inspired the radical responses to the world’s worst financial crises. \nBorn in the small market town of Langport\, just after the Panic of 1825 swept across England\, Bagehot followed in his father’s footsteps and took a position at the local family bank―but his influence on financial matters would soon spread far beyond the county of Somerset. Persuasive and precocious\, he came to hold sway in political circles\, making high-profile friends\, including William Gladstone\, and enemies\, such as Lord Overstone and Benjamin Disraeli. As a prolific essayist on wide-ranging topics\, Bagehot won the admiration of Matthew Arnold and Woodrow Wilson\, and delighted in paradox. He was also a misogynist\, and while he opposed slavery\, he misjudged Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War. As editor of The Economist\, he offered astute commentary on the financial issues of his day\, and his name lives on in an eponymous weekly column. \nAbout the Author\nJames Grant\, financial journalist and historian\, is the founder and editor of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer\, a twice-monthly journal of the investment markets. His book\, The Forgotten Depression\, 1921: The Crash That Cured Itself\, a history of America’s last governmentally unmedicated business-cycle downturn\, won the 2015 Hayek Prize of the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. His latest book is Bagehot: The Life and Times of the Greatest Victorian (W.W. Norton & Company\, July 2019). \nThis talk is followed by a reception. Doors open at 5:30 pm. The first 100 attendees will receive a copy of the book. \nThis event will be livestreamed via this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZM7BgZNGhzs&feature=youtu.be

SUMMARY:Orthodoxy in America Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Theological Education in the Twenty-First Century \nThe Very Rev. Dr. John Behr\nFather Georges Florovsky Distinguished Professor of Patristics\nSt. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary \n“Go and teach” has been a mandate for all Christians from the beginning\, being at the heart of spreading the Gospel. Yet the context in which this mandate is carried out continually changes\, always presenting new challenges\, especially in the 21st century. If previous centuries were torn apart\, as Edward Gibbon jested\, over an “iota” (the difference between homoousios and homoiousios)\, we face broader\, more profound\, and more disturbing challenges today. In a “post-truth” era\, riven by factionalism and polarization\, how do we teach the truth that sets us free and find the freedom for which we are set free? \nIn this year’s Orthodoxy in America Lecture\, Father Behr will explore the task before us\, that of continuing the past century’s renaissance of theological reflection and education\, which has taken place largely in the West but has deep roots in Eastern Orthodox history. The increasing contexts\, institutional homes\, and platforms in which Orthodox theology is taught offer us possibilities not envisioned before\, yet it is only by returning to “the Word delivered in the beginning” (St. Polycarp) that the coherence of theology can again be found and the teaching of theology flourish.

SUMMARY:Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz on People\, Power and Profits: Progressive Capitalism for an Age of Discontent
DESCRIPTION:Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz grew up during the golden age of capitalism in Gary\, Indiana\, a steel town whose fortunes rose and fell with the waves of industrialization and deindustrialization. But even during Stiglitz’s childhood\, life didn’t seem so golden. He saw inequality\, racial discrimination\, and labor strife all around\, and that was when capitalism was thriving and the middle class\, ascendant. In the ensuing years things grew far worse. Back in Gary for his 55th high school reunion in 2015\, Stiglitz was dismayed by the decrepit state of his hometown and the economic and physical miseries borne by many of his classmates. \nWhat had happened? Stiglitz has long sounded the alarm about growing economic inequality in the United States. As chief economist of the World Bank and Chairman of Clinton’s Council of Economic Advisors\, he saw first-hand the toll that financial deregulation\, globalization\, and government inaction can take on a community. This has played out over and over again in cities and towns across the United States\, feeding into the resentment that fueled Donald Trump’s election in 2016. The question we should ask ourselves today\, Stiglitz says\, is “What can we do about it?” \nIn his new book\, People\, Power and Profits: Progressive Capitalism for an Age of Discontent\, Stiglitz answers that question by laying out a 21st Century Social Contract to rebuild the American middle class and reinvigorate the American economy. Many candidates will likely use Stiglitz’s timely advice in their 2020 presidential campaigns. \nProf. Stiglitz will be interviewed by Bruce Greenwald\, the Robert Heilbrunn Professor of Finance and Asset Management at Columbia Business School and the academic co-director of the Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing. Described by The New York Times as “a guru to Wall Street’s gurus\,” Greenwald is an authority on value investing with additional expertise in productivity and the economics of information. \nConversation followed by reception. Seating is limited. The first 125 attendees will receive a free copy of the book. \nCo-sponsored by the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis and the Museum of American Finance

SUMMARY:Adam Cohen\, “Social and Sacred in the Medieval Haggadah”
DESCRIPTION:Many have read Geraldine Brooks’ bestselling novel People of the Book\, which centers on the famous Sarajevo Haggadah (a book that contains the text recited at the Jewish Passover). This 2008 work of historical fiction wove a compelling story about the medieval and modern history of the 14th-century manuscript\, but the full-page illuminations that make the haggadah so special played virtually no role in Brooks’ novel. Cohen will use this remarkable manuscript and its rich picture cycle as a springboard for exploring the ways that illustrated haggadot expressed two different\, but intertwined issues: the social world of medieval Jews and their relationship to “the sacred.” Pictures were carefully crafted vehicles that served many functions\, from crystallizing contemporary practice and shaping experience to articulating multilayered ideas about the relationship of Jews to God\, to one another\, and to their non-Jewish neighbors. For at least some Jews in the Middle Ages\, to be the “people of the book” meant not only reading texts but also decorating them in ways that revealed urgent cogitations about identity\, place\, and time. \nAll Fordham events in Jewish studies are free and open to public.

SUMMARY:Merger Masters: Tales of Arbitrage\, presented by Kate Welling and Mario Gabelli
DESCRIPTION:This presentation by Kate Welling\, the publisher of the financial journal Welling on Wall St.\, and Mario Gabelli\, the chairman and CEO of Gamco Investors\, Inc.\, will reveal profiles of monumentally successful merger investors based on exclusive interviews with some of the greatest minds to practice the art of arbitrage. Michael Price\, John Paulson\, Paul Singer\, and others offer practical perspectives on how their backgrounds in the risk-conscious world of merger arbitrage helped them make their biggest deals. They share their insights on the discipline that underlies their fortunes\, whether they practice the “plain vanilla” strategy of announced deals\, the aggressive strategy of activist investment\, or any strategy in between on the risk spectrum. \nMerger Masters delves into the human side of risk arbitrage\, exploring how top practitioners deal with the behavioral aspects of generating consistent profits from risk arbitrage. The book also includes perspectives from the other side of the mergers and acquisitions divide in the form of interviews with a trio of iconic CEOs: Bill Stiritz\, Peter McCausland\, and Paul Montrone. All three took advantage of M&A opportunities to help build long-term returns but often found themselves at odds with the short-term focus of Wall Street and merger investors. Told in lively\, accessible prose\, with bonus facts and figures for transaction junkies\, Merger Masters is an incomparable set of stories with plenty of unfiltered lessons from the best managers of our time. \nThe first 250 attendees will receive a copy of this book. \nSponsored by the CFA Society of NY\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance
