SUMMARY:A Consistent Ethic of Life 2.0: Cardinal Bernardin’s “Seamless Garment” at 35
DESCRIPTION:In December 1983\, at Fordham University\, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago delivered a landmark lecture outlining what he called a “consistent ethic of life”—using the Catholic tradition to articulate a defense of life at every stage\, and in a way that could cross religious and political boundaries. \nPope Francis has given new life to the consistent ethic\, and this symposium will examine how the “seamless garment” looks in 2018\, and how it resonates with other faith traditions. Bishop Emeritus Gerald Kicanas\, who worked with Bernardin\, will deliver a keynote address to be followed by three respondents: Katelyn Beaty\, an evangelical author and speaker; Rabbi Jill Jacobs\, executive director of T’ruah; and Herb Geraghty\, an atheist who works for Rehumanize International. \nAdmission to this event is free. Please RSVP to crcevent@fordham.edu.

SUMMARY:Merger Masters: Tales of Arbitrage\, presented by Kate Welling and Mario Gabelli
DESCRIPTION:This presentation by Kate Welling\, the publisher of the financial journal Welling on Wall St.\, and Mario Gabelli\, the chairman and CEO of Gamco Investors\, Inc.\, will reveal profiles of monumentally successful merger investors based on exclusive interviews with some of the greatest minds to practice the art of arbitrage. Michael Price\, John Paulson\, Paul Singer\, and others offer practical perspectives on how their backgrounds in the risk-conscious world of merger arbitrage helped them make their biggest deals. They share their insights on the discipline that underlies their fortunes\, whether they practice the “plain vanilla” strategy of announced deals\, the aggressive strategy of activist investment\, or any strategy in between on the risk spectrum. \nMerger Masters delves into the human side of risk arbitrage\, exploring how top practitioners deal with the behavioral aspects of generating consistent profits from risk arbitrage. The book also includes perspectives from the other side of the mergers and acquisitions divide in the form of interviews with a trio of iconic CEOs: Bill Stiritz\, Peter McCausland\, and Paul Montrone. All three took advantage of M&A opportunities to help build long-term returns but often found themselves at odds with the short-term focus of Wall Street and merger investors. Told in lively\, accessible prose\, with bonus facts and figures for transaction junkies\, Merger Masters is an incomparable set of stories with plenty of unfiltered lessons from the best managers of our time. \nThe first 250 attendees will receive a copy of this book. \nSponsored by the CFA Society of NY\, the Gabelli Center for Global Security Analysis\, and the Museum of American Finance

SUMMARY:What Happened? Why? What Now?: Clergy Sexual Abuse in the Catholic Church
DESCRIPTION:A distinguished panel of speakers will reflect on the ongoing Catholic clergy sexual abuse crises from their particular scholarly and professional vantage points—psychology\, law\, theology\, religious journalism\, and ethics. This conversation is especially timely in light of the recently released Pennsylvania Grand Jury report and a wider spate of revelations in the United States and around the world about clergy abuse and its concealment. By asking three fundamental questions—”What?” “Why?” and “What now?”—this event seeks to contribute to well-informed and effective responses by and from Catholics\, citizens\, and all who are impacted by this reality.

SUMMARY:Alan Blinder on Economics and Politics
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Gabelli Center\, the Fixed Income Analyst Society\, and the New York Alternative Hedgefund Roundtable \nAlan Blinder\, Ph.D.\, leading economist and political expert\, will discuss the clash of economics and politics through the words of his new book\, Advice and Dissent: Why America Suffers When Economics and Politics Collide. \nAmerican economic policy and politicians historically have had complications connecting on their viewpoints. The cultural divide separates these two forums\, which the country expects to be unified and run efficiently. To a fault\, politicians are concerned with winning elections and keeping their counterparts satisfied while economists\nprovide their calculated standpoint\, leaving our nation in a world full of disconnect. Blinder will discuss ways to bridge the gap between these two parties to encourage unity amongst the leaders of our nation. \nThe first 100 attendees will receive a copy of his book Why Economics and Politics Collide.

SUMMARY:Touching the Face of the Cosmos Conference
DESCRIPTION:“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet” —Stephen Hawking (1942–2018) \nJoin us for this one-day series of panels\, presentations\, and papers that explore a missing ingredient in the attempt of humanity to lift itself off this planet and explore the universe. This ingredient both precedes and exceeds science\, and is not about making money or attaining military superiority. It is called sense of wonder\, spirituality\, or religion—the urge of every human being to know what we are doing in this universe. \nThe anthology Touching the Face of the Cosmos: On the Intersection of Space Travel and Religion\, edited by Paul Levinson and Michael Waltemathe (ebook Connected Editions\, paperback and hardcover Fordham University Press\, 2015)\, assembled a group of essays and short stories exploring this issue by leading thinkers and writers\, including one of the last interviews with John Glenn. Our conference continues this exploration. \nSchedule \n2 – 3:45 p.m. | Panels: The Intersection of Space Travel and Religion\nThe Missing Spirit\nPaul Levinson\nFordham University \nOpening the Gates of Heaven: Religious and Philosophical Implications of Space Travel\nMichael Waltemathe\nRuhr-Universität Bochum\, Germany\n \nIn Search of the Meaning of the Meaning of Life: Space Travel as Communication\nAleksandar Bogdanic\nUniversity of Banja Luka\, Bosnia \nCivilization\, Culture\, and the New Frontier\nJames Heiser\nBishop\, Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of North America\n\n4 – 5:15 p.m. | Science Fiction Looks at Space Travel and Religion\nPaul Levinson\, Alex Shvartsman\, and David Walton\nAuthors\nScience fiction is the only kind of fiction that delves into the quintessentially human characteristic of actively shaping and attempting to improve our future in this universe. Three science fiction authors will look at what science fiction shows us about the role of religion in moving humans off this planet into the cosmos. \n5:30 p.m. | Plenary Session: What Little Children See in Space\nMolly Vozick-Levinson and Brittany Miller\nThe Children’s Learning Center\, New York City  \n7 p.m. | Keynote Address: Would You Baptize an Extraterrestrial?\nGuy Consolmagno\, S.J.
