For the second year in a row, Fordham has been recognized by The Princeton Review as a school with a significant commitment to sustainability. The University appears in the “Guide to Green Colleges: 2026 Edition,” which profiles colleges in the United States and abroad that are leading the way in sustainability.
Each school was assigned a “green rating” that measured how well they foster sustainable campus cultures, prepare students for careers in the green economy, and support environmentally responsible policies. Fordham earned a 93/99 green rating thanks to measures such as having a dedicated sustainability officer and committee, offering sustainability-focused degree programs, and having a publicly available plan for managing greenhouse gas emissions.
A Helpful Guide for Sustainably-Minded Students
The list was compiled using survey data taken during the 2024-2025 academic year. According to Rob Franek, editor-in-chief of The Princeton Review, the surveys revealed that students care about sustainability as they evaluate potential schools. Nearly 60% of the student respondents said having information about a university’s environmental commitment would impact their decision on where to attend college.
The Green Colleges list is intended to be a helpful resource for students “who want their ‘best-fit’ college to also be a green one,” Franek said.
Sustainability at Fordham
Fordham’s inclusion on the list coincides with other recent milestones in its ongoing sustainability efforts. In July, the University launched the Bronx Green Jobs Center, a workforce development and training hub that will prepare Bronx community members for opportunities in the green economy, like clean energy, electric-vehicle infrastructure, and urban agriculture. The center, created in partnership with community organizations, is set to open its doors next fall.
The University also earned a bronze STAR rating this year from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. The STAR system was created to measure and encourage all facets of sustainability in higher education.
In August, Fordham signed a long-term agreement that will supply the University with renewable power generated at a solar farm on Staten Island. In combination with existing solar panels on campus, the partnership is expected to help offset half of the Rose Hill campus’s electricity consumption with green energy.
