As New York City starts to thaw, March is the perfect time to take advantage of the city’s lively cultural calendar. From beloved annual traditions to celebrations that welcome the arrival of spring, there’s no shortage of ways to get out and explore—many of them free.

Here are five things to do in New York City this March:

1. Celebrate Irish Spirit at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade

New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade returns to Fifth Avenue on March 17. The parade dates back to 1762—making it older than the United States itself—and features thousands of marchers, bagpipers, dancers, and representatives from Irish cultural organizations. 2. Welcome Spring at a Holi Celebration at the Seaport

Celebrate the Hindu festival of colors at a vibrant Holi Celebration at the South Street Seaport. Holi marks the arrival of spring and the end of winter, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The event will feature colorful powder tossing, music, dance performances, and family-friendly activities, all set against the historic waterfront in Lower Manhattan.

3. See the Blooms at the NYBG Orchid Show

What if New York City was made of orchids? That’s the question the New York Botanical Garden explores with “The Orchid Show: Mr. Flower Fantastic’s Concrete Jungle,” this year’s iteration of the garden’s annual orchid extravaganza. Come see subway cars and your favorite pizza shops reimagined through dazzling floral arrangements by world-renowned floral artist Mr. Flower Fantastic.

Through April 26 | Bronx | Adults $35, Students and Seniors $31 with valid I.D.
