Fordham University’s student-run newspaper, The Observer, has garnered first-place honors in the American Scholastic Press Association’s 2006-2007 contest for yearbooks, magazines and newspapers.

“We at The Observer put so much time and effort into our publication in an attempt to reach a level of legitimate respectability,” said senior Nancy Young, editor in chief of The Observer. “Being honored with this kind of award makes us feel as if we are truly living up to that standard.”

The Observer was one of more than 170 high school and collegiate publications to be awarded first place in the newspaper category. The first place designation is the association’s second-highest honor.

The first-place honors come just weeks after The Observer received an honorable mention by the Associated Collegiate Press at its National College Newspaper Convention. The paper, which was founded in 1981 and is based at the Lincoln Center campus, has won numerous awards over the years.
