Evon Hekkala, PhD, ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of biological sciences, received a $198,000 Rapid Response Research (RAPID) grant in August from the National Science Foundation in collaboration with Patricia Wright, PhD, Herrnstein Professor of Conservation Biology at Stony Brook University. The grant will support the recovery and study of well-preserved fossil deposits that the team discovered in Madagascar this summer, which could shed light on the country’s mass vertebrate extinction roughly 1,000 years ago and how biodiversity responds to environmental change and human activity over time.
Robb Hernández, PhD, ARTS AND SCIENCES, professor of English, authored a new book, Transplanetary Americas: Art, Outer Space, and the Latinx Imagination, which will be published by Duke University Press on Oct. 20. The book explores how the modern space race has driven Latinx artists to look up and engage with creative expressions drawn from the solar system and beyond.
